The plot, two brothers, Ivan & Neil McCormick dream of starting their own band and making their way to the top in 1980s London/Ireland but instead their childhood friends of U2 are ambitious and successful in their careers of music. However, Neil calls all of the shots, making bad decisions that prevent both him and his Ivan of living the dream that U2 have now sought. Great movie, highly recommended!!!

U2 was the soundtrack to my youth and they, amazingly, continue to not suck even though they have been famous for so long. Decent movie but the book was much better, as it more accurately portrays the real relationship between all concerned. The book even has a foreward from Bonno, so you know he gets the humor in it all. The movie deviates significantly from reality and even what was portrayed in the book. For instance, the gun thing never happened and was added by writers doing the screenplay for sow drama and action, pretty disturbing but whatever. Anyway, the movie is not bad and worth seeing but the book it's based on is really great.

Ce film sur ce groupe de rock irlandais qui voulait être mais ne fut pas U2 est particulièrement jouissif, et pourrait bien devenir culte (dans le sens de "film inconnu du grand public mais révéré par un petit groupe de fans"). Le personnage joué par le toujours excellent Ben Barnes ( Prince Caspian , Un Mariage de rêve , Dorian Gray ) est un loser magnifique, qu'on a autant envie de baffer que de plaindre et de soutenir. L'acteur qui joue son frère est une révélation : Robert Sheehan est en effet éblouissant de finesse et de tragique. Depuis, on a pu le retrouver dans les deux premières saisons de Misfits , l'excellent Cherrybomb (non sorti en France, mais trouvable en import UK si vous gérez l'anglais), et le moins intéressant Mortal Instruments .

L'ensemble dépeint le milieu du rock avec beaucoup moins de glamour et de paillettes que le vernis qu'on en voit habituellement. Le scenario (basé sur une histoire vraie !) est très bien mené : on aurait pu s'ennuyer ferme avec une telle histoire et c'est au contraire mené tambour battant. Quant à la réalisation, elle est très soignée, collant parfaitement à son sujet. On n'est pas obligé d'être un fan de U2 (mais si vous l'êtes, ce sera d'autant mieux pour votre plaisir) pour apprécier ce film décrivant une vocation ratée, l'entêtement tragicomique et l'indéfectible fidélité des deux frères malgré tous leurs mauvais choix.

C'est vraiment à voir, surtout pour les musiciens !!

I don't care what anyone else says about this film - I love it. I tend to read reviews before I watch the film, so I started with not much hope as most of the reviews said that it wasn't especially worth watching. However, 10 minutes in, I was totally captivated by the story and the plot.

Firstly I must say that I loved the music in this film. Many have said that the songs were the let down of the whole film, but I think that without the songs this film wouldn't have been as good as it was. The plot of the film is pleasantly simple: two brothers who want their band to succeed over fellow classmates' band U2. From the off, this film managed to grab the interest of the audience and the development of the two brothers' relationship throughout the film was enjoyable to watch, especially as it was quite lifelike: brothers do not always get along.

Ben Barnes as Neil McCormick was perfect for the role. I think he played the character to exactly the right tone: we as an audience aren't really supposed to like Neil because he always makes the wrong choices, effecting both him and others around him, and the way which Ben Barnes manages to convey the character's outlook of his decisions sets a perfect tone for the film. Robert Sheehan as Ivan McCormick is personally my favourite character as the younger brother who (spoiler alert) is stopped from being in U2 by Neil's bad decisions. A lot of reviews I have read about this character have said that he didn't live up to expectations, however I feel that, similarly to Ben Barnes, Robert Sheehan managed to capture both the innocence and the raw emotion of Ivan. The other characters in the film were also likeable and sometimes comedic in the film, with special mention of the late Pete Postlethwaite, Martin McCann and Peter Serafinowicz as landlord Karl, Bono/Paul Hewson and manager Will Hammond respectively.

To sum up, this film is one of the best films I have seen in a while, with the right tone, pacing and plot lines as well as developed and interesting characters. I have watched it several times, and I would definitely recommend this to anyone who asked about it who was looking for an enjoyable Friday film night or just for a laugh. And for any Robert Sheehan fans out there, he bends over. In skinny jeans. Just saying.
