Summary

  • Matthew Vaughn now working on Kick-Ass reboot trilogy.
  • The Stuntman will be part of the trilogy, and is now in production.
  • The first part of the trilogy, School Fight, already wrapped a couple of years ago.

Writer and director Matthew Vaughn is now working on his next movie, The Stuntman, which is likely to be the second installment in Vaughn’s new Kick-Ass reboot trilogy. As per a report by Variety, Vaughn is now “deep into producing” the project, which will follow two brothers who both become stuntmen.

While further details remain under wraps at present, the report does reveal that The Stuntman is currently in production, with Vaughn filming some of the movie last October in Hampshire. For the sequence a “1970s-style fun fair” complete with “a helter skelter and ferris wheel,” which had been installed for the movie, was used.

According to Vaughn, The Stuntman “is part of a new “Kick-Ass” trilogy,” with the first part being a movie called School Fight, which already wrapped a few years ago. Both these are then expected to lead to a third movie, which will be closer to the Kick-Ass reboot than audiences are no doubt expecting. How exactly these three movies will tie together to relaunch Kick-Ass is unknown, but it’s all undeniably intriguing.

The Stuntman comes courtesy of Vaughn’s Marv Studios banner alongside Walters’ Zebbo Productions, with the plan being to launch the project at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) or at Sundance Film Festival 2025.

Matthew Vaughn recently spoke about his “meta” approach to the Kick-Ass reboot, revealing that the trilogy will be his latest attempt to once again reinvent the “R-rated superhero” much like he did with the first movie back in 2010.

“We’re halfway through it. There’s a very, very dare I say it... and it’s gonna be a cliche coming out of this head of mine. It is a very, very meta universe. It is what, you know, 'Kick Ass' was reinventing and creating a R-rated superhero and no one was really doing it. This is taking that whole concept to a worthy…not even a sequel, because I think it’s just a whole new way of doing 'Kick Ass,' which couldn’t be more 'Kick Ass.'”

At the time, Vaughn referred to a project called Vram, which is likely the same project as The Stuntman, saying, “The trilogy will be School Fight, this movie, let's call it Vram for the time being, and then Kick-Ass, and they're all connected.”

Both School Fight and The Stuntman have been helmed by stunt performer-turned-director Damien Walters (Kingsman: The Secret Service), with the former centering on “a teenager who gets into a fight with a love rival at school,” according to Variety’s most recent report.

Released back in 2010, the first Kick-Ass is based on the comic book of the same name by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., and follows ordinary teenager, Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) who longs to become a superhero just like the ones he spends all his time reading about. Buying a costume, he goes out into the night to fight crime, only to find out it’s a lot more difficult than he expected.

Spawning a sequel, Kick-Ass 2 in 2013, the franchise has since gained a passionate following, and no doubt fans cannot wait to see how School Fight and The Stuntman will connect to a new take on the fledgling superhero.
