Former NFL star wide receiver and current ESPN analyst Keyshawn Johnson was arrested early Monday morning for misdemeanor domestic battery.

TMZ.com reported the news, indicating that Johnson made $20,000 bail and is no longer in custody following his arrest in Calabasas, Calif. The report provided more details as to what transpired between Johnson and his ex-girlfriend, citing law enforcement and sources with knowledge of the situation:

According to law enforcement ... Keyshawn was involved in a fight with his ex-girlfriend when things allegedly got physical.  Sources say he smashed her phone, causing a gash to her hand.  Our sources say the two had an up-and-down relationship and were arguing over marriage.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies provided a brief comment on the matter.

"When deputies arrived, it was determined that the resident and his ex-girlfriend were involved in a domestic dispute," Sgt. Carmen Arballo said, per CBSLA.com.

Johnson enjoyed a successful collegiate career at the University of Southern California before becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 1996 NFL draft, landing him with the New York Jets. Although he never quite lived up to the billing of his gaudy draft status, Johnson still had four 1,000-yard seasons, was named to three Pro Bowls and won Super Bowl XXXVII as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in his 11 NFL seasons.

Details on the incident involving Johnson and his ex-girlfriend are still scant at the moment, but he has not had any significant run-ins with the law in the past. Until all the facts are revealed, it's difficult to determine whether this will impact his status at ESPN.

Jason McIntyre of The Big Lead is reporting that it's unclear when Johnson will next appear on the network:

It did sound as though the reported altercation wasn't directly physical, if Johnson indeed did smash his ex-girlfriend's phone, which was the apparent cause of her hand wound. But as more information surfaces and the police report is released, a better idea of what happened will emerge.

Johnson will likely have a public response to the situation as well, and how he handles that should go a long way in determining his future as an analyst and TV personality.
