Gorloks Split SLIAC Doubleheader with MUW

SAUGET, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Mississippi University for Women Owls for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks split the doubleheader as they lost the first game by a final score of 10-3 and then bounced back to win the second game by a final score of 25-5 to move to 10-9 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. With the split, the Owls move to 10-7 on the year and 2-2 in the SLIAC.

The Gorloks would get off to a slow start in their first game of the day as the Owls scored a run in the top of the second, a run in the top of the third, and five runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. Webster would pick it up in the bottom of the fifth and scored two runs in the inning to cut the Owls lead to five. MUW would add two runs in the top of the seventh and a run in the top of the eighth to push their lead to 10-2 heading into the ninth. Webster would bring a run across in the bottom of the ninth but the Owls would pick up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.

Ryan Greifelt (2-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed eight hits and four earned runs while striking out two in 3.2 innings. Caleb Zbrozek, Scott Detweiler, and Cade Gebhard pitched in relief as the three combined to allow six hits and three earned runs while striking out five in the final 5.1 innings of the contest.

The Gorloks were held to just seven hits in the game. R.J. LaRocco led the way as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. James Theodore and Zach Goodman also recorded multi-hit games as Theodore went 2-for-5 while Goodman went 2-for-3. In addition, Parker Murrow added an RBI for Webster.

Webster picked it up to start the second game and would score three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. The Owls would respond with two runs in the top of the second, but a five-run rally from the Gorloks in the bottom half of the inning would give Webster an 8-2 lead early in the game. MUW would answer with another run in the top of the third, but six runs over the next two innings would put Webster up 14-3 heading into the fifth. The Owls scored two more runs in the top of the fifth but 11 runs over the next two innings would solidify the win for Webster.

Kevin Corcoran (2-2) was the starting pitcher as he allowed 11 hits and four earned runs while striking out four in 5.0 innings. Elijah Rompala-Matthews and Joel Arsenault pitched the last two innings for Webster as they allowed two hits while striking out three.

The Gorloks offense exploded for 21 hits in the game. Nathaniel Martinez led the way for the Gorloks as he went 3-for-5 with two homeruns and seven RBI. Karl Peters and Zach Goodman also had great games as Peters went 2-for-3 with a gram slam while Goodman went 3-for-4 with a solo homerun and two RBI. In addition, James Theodore went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Parker Murrow went 1-for-3 with an RBI, A.J. Simmons went 2-for-2 with two RBI, R.J. LaRocco went 2-for-2 with an RBI, Evan Evola went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Caleb Zbrozek went 2-for-2 with three RBI.

The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Saturday, March 30th when they travel to Batesville, Arkansas, to take on the Lyon (Ark.) College Scots for a SLIAC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow.
