The Exchange heads to Afm with ‘Kung Fu Girl’ (exclusive)

Action-adventure approved for theatrical distribution in China.

Brian O’Shea’s The Exchange has come on board to handle the completed family fantasy action-adventure Kung Fu Girl and will launch talks with worldwide buyers at Afm this week.

Chinese rights are available and The Exchange said the film is approved for theatrical distribution in China.

Kenny Gage and Devon Downs directed the film about a 12-year old student who challenges the school bully, and in her journey through real and virtual worlds learns to strengthen a fractured bond with her father.

Adam Liao, Sun Yanying and Chuan “Melody” Bi co-wrote the screenplay.

Film News Roundup: Miramax Developing ‘I Won’t Be Home for Christmas’

In today’s film news roundup, “I Won’t Be Home for Christmas” is in the works, the NFL has made a documentary about female team owners and D Street Pictures has signed Kenny Gage and Devon Downs to direct the dance feature “Move.”

Miramax has acquired film rights to Lauren Iungerich’s holiday-themed screenplay “I Won’t Be Home for Christmas.”

Iungerich is set to direct, as well as produce, alongside Eli Roth and Roger Birnbaum under their newly-formed Arts District Entertainment; Jamie Dooner; and Miramax’s Bill Block. Jennie Frisbie, Michael Besman and Miramax’s Michael Lachance will executive produce. Production is slated for June and will be supervised by Lachance.

Film News Roundup: ‘Kung Fu Girl’ Set for Chinese Shoot With Kenny Gage, Devon Downs
In today’s film news roundup, “Kung Fu Girl” gets directors, a documentary on President Donald Trump’s mental health starts production and blockchain platform TaTaTu reports early success.

China Project

China’s SinoLicensing Media has signed the directing team of Kenny Gage and Devon Downs to direct their upcoming feature, “Kung Fu Girl,” Variety has learned exclusively.

The film will be shot on location in China later this year. Gage/Downs’ credits include the recent Bet Digital series “The Last One” and the indie feature “Cynthia.” This is their eighth feature film.

Set for Chinese theatrical release in 2019, “Kung Fu girl” centers around a 12-year-old female martial artist and includes a strong anti-bullying message. Hongbin Liao wrote the script.

The producer is Chuan “Melody” Bi and Michael Fang is the executive producer. Gage/Downs are represented by manager/producer Judy Fox.

How and when did you guys initially come up with the idea for Anarchy Parlor?

Kenny Gage: Devon and I have been friends for years. We are fans of the "realism" style of horror and were looking to make a film that felt familiar, yet very different. We read a crazy article about the 17th century practice of binding books in human skin and knowing that this film was looking to become a reality, it truly gave us the inspiration to take our story to another level.

The distributor snapped up North American rights and plans a pre-theatrical release for the horror title on May 12 followed by theatrical on June 19.

Parlor Descends into Dark Territory with this Preview for Screamfest La

Screamfest La continues to heat up, despite the weather cooling down. Devon Downs and Kenny Gage's (Raze) Parlor will play at this year's festival. In fact, this film will have its World Premiere there, this October 14th, 2014. The film takes a note from Eli Roth's Hostel (2005) as several vacationers are trapped and tortured, in Eastern Europe. Parlor centrally stars Robert Lasardo (Death Race) Anthony Del Negro (Deep in the Darkness) and Jordan James Smith. A preview of the film's launch is hosted here. In the story, six friends head out to Eastern Europe for fun, partying and good times. The dark clouds descend when they encounter a strange tattoo artist. Now, they find themselves trapped deep, below ground. Escape is out of the question, but torture is on the schedule. The film's first poster is hosted here. The graphic shows actor Lasardo as the Artist. He has already dipped his inker into blood.

The writing/directing team of Kenny Gage and Devon Downs will host the world-wide premiere of their new horror film, Parlor, during this year’s Screamfest film festival. The well-known genre festival kicks off its 14th annual event in Los Angeles on October 14 through October 23 at the Tcl Chinese 6 Theatres (6801 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028).

The film follows six young college hopefuls vacationing and partying in Eastern Europe who get more than they bargained for when they unwittingly get caught up in a maniacal tattoo artist’s fiendish side business.
