Found some eps online (sadly the Soundcloud that had them all is deleted)
And having listened to some before, it's one of the most joyous I've ever heard.

Surprised there's not a dedicated thread on here, bar the one specifically on the records of Jess Conrad.

As for my favourites, Pat Campbell's Country and Irish anti-miscarriage pact-with-God tract 'The Deal'
Aside from the more obvious ones (Benny's Song)...

https://www.mixcloud.com/Jerry1963/kenny050480/ Jagg, the runnerup on this fascinates. Long rumoured to be a hoax record, possibly done by Cliff Richard (who sang a version of the song in question, If You Walked Away From Me Today), but someone online found a copy of the record in question. Those records that the only record of their existence is this show fascinate me - Hapless Hugh here too.

But also Frankie was a Rebel, basically a 70s Roger Corman car chase movie compacted in three minutes sung by some Shakin' David Soul bloke from Leeds -

I genuinely like this.

I am obsessed with the Spotify playlist. I made a thread about Jess Conrad a while back because I'm amazed at how one man can churn out so many terrible songs.

I have 6 "Worlds Worst Wireless" (later became "Bottom 30") shows.  Five from 1977 and one from 1980.
Some (or all) of these came from soundcloud.
I think he did others as well but I don't have them.

#Yes, I mentioned the thread above.
The thing is, I was stunned that considering how ostensibly well known he is, how unsuccessful his records were. Never had a top 10 hit. I presumed he must have had one big hit, but no... How did he survive so long in showbiz?  He didn't even have the novelty value of contemporaries like Wee Willie Harris (RIP) or Screaming Lord Sutch.

Is he like a British Twink (as in Adele King, not as in the other meaning of the word)?

Kankurette

That's what I get for not reading the thread. I think he did movies as well, I know Why Am I Living? was in one of them. That's what we're all asking ourselves, Jess. From Wikipedia:

Spoiler alert
QuoteConrad was born in Brixton, South London and started his career as a repertory actor and film extra, before being cast in a television play, Bye, Bye Barney, as a pop singer. He was noticed by Jack Good, who included him in his TV series Oh Boy!. Conrad then was signed to Decca Records and had a number of chart hits, including "Cherry Pie", "This Pullover", "Mystery Girl" and "Pretty Jenny"; also recording for Columbia, Pye President and EMI.

Between the late 1950s and mid-1960s, Conrad appeared in a number of films such as Serious Charge (uncredited), The Boys, Rag Doll, (filmed in 1960, and released in 1961); K.I.L. 1 and Konga as well as Michael Powell's The Queen's Guards. Conrad played Danny Pace in an episode of The Human Jungle called "The Flip Side Man" in 1963.

During the 1970s, he spent some time in the stage shows Godspell and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and also featured in a cameo role in the Sex Pistols film The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. In 1977 no fewer than seven of Conrad's singles were included in the 'World's Worst Record' list, chosen by listeners to Capital FM DJ Kenny Everett's show, and "This Pullover", voted sixth worst song ever, later featured on The World's Worst Record Show, a 1978 LP dedicated to the songs voted for, together with two other Conrad recordings "Cherry Pie" and "Why Am I Living?" He also made an appearance in Are You Being Served as Mr Walpole, head of sporting equipment, in the episode "Memories Are Made of This".

Conrad also appeared in the 1984 TV series of Miss Marple, in the episode entitled The Body in the Library as Raymond Starr. He also starred in the 1993 film The Punk and the Princess.

In the 1990s, Conrad made regular cameo appearances on Jim Davidson's revived version of The Generation Game on BBC1. In 1992, Conrad appeared in the Christmas Special of Big Break, also presented by Davidson and John Virgo. He was the "booby" prize of the show presented to actress Ruth Madoc. Contestants who failed to make the final of Big Break were often nearly given a box set of Conrad's hit singles.

Since then, Conrad has appeared in a number of documentaries and television programmes, often offering stories of violent encounters with other famous people. In a BBC Arena documentary about the record producer Joe Meek, Conrad boasted of biting off part of the nose of the singer Heinz during a confrontation backstage at a package show in the early 1960s. Similarly, in Sex, Secrets & Frankie Howerd, he told of threatening to cut off comedian Frankie Howerd's ears when Howerd made undesired sexual advances to him in a dressing room. In 2005, Conrad had a guest role in the sitcom Last of the Summer Wine.

In the 2009 film Telstar: The Joe Meek Story, Conrad is played by Nigel Harman. Conrad himself appears in one scene, depicting his backstage fight with Heinz and his biting of Heinz's nose. Conrad also plays the role of Larry Parnes in the film. In 2016 Jess appeared in Liam Galvin's Crime Thriller Film 'Mob Handed' playing a corrupt Judge. In October 2022, he appeared in the BBC soap opera Doctors as Alan Yates. In 2023 Jess played a leading role in 'Somebodys Daughter' by Zara Phillips also directed by Liam Galvin.

He's also a Freemason and a member of the Grand Order of Water Rats.

There's some actual established musicians on that album as well, Del Shannon and Adam 'Runk Bunk' Faith spring to mind (and IIRC Ferlin Husky's country stuff was pretty decent, that song about the drunk driver who RUNS HIS OWN KIDS OVER is unintentionally hilarious though). Spinning Wheel would be a good song if it had better production and they turned down that annoying clop-clop sound.

I've also become obsessed with the Vernons Girls after listening to that album. They're like Atomic Kitten's shouty mums. 'He is special, this one! He's the midnight sun! He's a grrrreat big cedar trrree!'

George White

Yes, and I've seen most of his films. (Konga, etc).

Ferlin Husky is in  a terrible film called Hillbillys in a Haunted House, featuring the unlikely combination of Basil Rathbone, Chaney Jr and John Carradine and Merle Haggard.

Talking about the Joe Meek Story to a friend, I had to introduced him to the concept of Jess Conrad. Shared with him Soccer Superstar. He was astonished.

The Deal still haunts me. Once openly laughed out loud when I saw a copy of IRELAND'S OWN (think the People's Friend for aul tradcaths) with an interview with Irish country star Ray Lynam, where he mentioned Pat Campbell, and then had to explain to my mum the Deal, when she was watching Lynam, an aul fave of hers.

George White

Never listened to this in full, and astonished how asinine this is.  Sounds like he's forgotten the lyrics and improvising.
