Artist Biography
The male-female duo of Keith & Billie were formed by two British Invasion singers, Keith Powell and Billie Davis, who recorded three singles together in 1965 and 1966. Powell and Davis had both recorded as featured solo artists before teaming up; Powell, a journeyman blue-eyed soul singer, never managed to make the charts, though the chirpy-voiced Davis had a couple hits in 1963 (including a cover of the Exciters' "Tell Him" that made the U.K. Top Ten). What might have been a good idea on paper wasn't too exciting on record, as the three singles were fairly tame British blue-eyed soul that didn't improve the singers' fortunes. After the duo broke up, Davis resumed her solo career, getting a small 1968 U.K. hit with "I Want You to Be My Baby," though Powell disappeared from the recording industry ranks. All six songs from the singles have been reissued on CD compilations, on both Powell's The Keith Powell Story and Davis' Whatcha Gonna Do? Singles, Rarities and Unreleased 1963-1966. ~ Richie Unterberger
