Interview: Keir O’Donnell discusses the creation of his debut feature ‘Marmalade’

Keir O’Donnell has been steadily working as an actor for over twenty years. In that time he has racked up credits in Sons of Anarchy, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, American Sniper, and AmbuLAnce. A few years ago he decided that he wanted to expand his horizons and began work on an idea for a film all of his own. Now, after several years in development, O’Donnell has stepped behind the camera to bring his debut feature, Marmalade, to the world.

Marmalade was both written and directed by O’Donnell and is a quirky and twisty crime noir. It stars Stranger Things’ Joe Keery in a very different role to that of Steve; Marmalade is sure to give his fans a thrill as they watch him stretch his acting muscles. The plot sees the recently incarcerated Baron (Joe Keery) strike up a friendship with his cellmate Otis (Aldis Hodge), a man with a well-versed history of prison breaks. As the pair hatch an escape plan together, Baron recalls the story of how he met Marmalade (Camila Morrone), the love of his life, and their “Bonnie and Clyde” style scheme to rob a bank in order to care for his sick mother and give the couple the life they have always dreamed of.

Ahead of Marmalade’s digital release on 12th February, THN were granted time to pick O’Doneell’s brain about the project. During our conversation we chatted about Marmalade’s inception and influences, as well as how O’Donnell’s background as an actor gave him a step up into directing. The discussion also touched on why audiences should take a chance on Marmalade, and we of course had a chat about how different Joe Keery’s character of Baron is to Steve, and why the young actor is making such interesting decisions with his career. You can watch the interview in all its glory below.

Signature Entertainment presents Marmalade on Digital Platforms from 12th February 2024.
