Kathryn Hahn, star of Disney+’s WandaVision, revealed how surprised she was by the number of award nominations the Marvel show racked up for the Emmys. The Emmy-nominated actress became an instant fan-favorite when she debuted as Agatha Harkness on the MCU's first TV show, even though the character is a relatively obscure Marvel Comics figure. Thanks to Hahn's portrayal, the TV version of the character vaulted into the mainstream, as even her theme song became a viral sensation in the days after its premiere.

The Disney+ television series is a spin-off set after Avengers: Endgame and follows Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) as she inadvertently creates a parallel reality after trying to cope with the loss of Vision. (Paul Bettany). WandaVision has earned 23 Emmy award nominations, alongside a plethora of other accolades. Kathryn Hahn, who portrays Agnes/Agatha Harkness in the sitcom-style show, discusses her surprise at how well it has been received.

In an interview with NYLON, Hahn reflects on the overwhelming acclaim for WandaVision, saying she was driving at the time of the nomination announcements. Still, she was aware of the enormous flood of congratulations coming in, though she didn’t know how successful the show had been just yet. After finding out, she immediately started texting her co-stars Olsen and Bettany, director Matt Shakman, and producer Kevin Feige. She then came home to a pleasant surprise from her daughter.

“It was just a blur. Then I got back here and I was able to come home to a cocktail. I had an Aperol Spritz and a little thing of salted cashews waiting for me with a couple Post-It notes from my daughter just saying “Congratulations,” which was really cute. I was shaking, I was so excited. Not in a bazillion years would I have thought that this show would have gone that distance. So yeah, we were all just really, really beyond tickled and just so grateful for all that.”

Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness in WandaVision

No one knew how well WandaVision would be received by critics and audiences, mainly as it was Marvel’s first dive into this sort of production. Hahn says she was initially attracted to the role because she was enticed by the trope of being able to portray two very different characters – a witch and a nosy neighbor. Despite her excitement, she never expected the show to resonate with many other people and become such a massive success with 23 Emmys in the pipeline.

The events of WandaVision will play a crucial part in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) film, in which Olsen will reprise her role as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. While fans know that Scarlet Witch’s storyline is still to continue, the same cannot be said for Hahn’s Agatha. In the final episode of WandaVision, Wanda defeated Agatha Harkness and trapped her in her persona of the nosy neighbor, Agatha, seemingly erasing her memory of her true identity.
