Leeds United want to sign Rotherham goalkeeper Viktor Johansson ahead of Sheffield United

Leeds United want to sign Rotherham United goalkeeper Viktor Johansson after their relegation from the Championship, according to Aftonbladet.

Writing on their website (26 April), the Swedish news outlet reported that the 25-year-old is a target for the Whites as well as Premier League strugglers, and Leeds’ Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United, and Championship outfit Stoke City for the summer transfer window.

The Sweden international, who has one cap for the national team, is unlikely to stay in League One with the Millers and Daniel Farke’s side are considering making a move.

Leeds United planning for Illan Meslier’s departure?

If there is one position at Elland Road that doesn’t need strengthening in the immediate future it’s the goalkeeper, with Illan Meslier comfortably the best in the Championship this season.

But with the team pushing for a return to the Premier League at the first attempt, they must also plan for the possibility that they don’t make it.

Should the team remain in the second tier of English football, most players in the squad are surely going to be targeted by teams in the top flight either in England or across Europe and Meslier would certainly be one of the most sought-after assets.

Johansson is an international goalkeeper with great experience and Rotherham were relegated this season despite him being in goal, not because of him, and he has shown great quality in the Championship.

It could simply be that the club are planning for all eventualities, or Farke wants to improve on Karl Darlow and Kristoffer Klaesson, but this is certainly one to keep an eye on.

In other Leeds news, this Elland Road star will surely leave the club in July after recent developments.
