Leeds United: Kristoffer Klaesson sent to hospital after car crash

Leeds United: Kristoffer Klaesson hospitalised after car crash in Norway

Leeds United goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson has been hospitalised after crashing into a barrier while in Norway, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

It was reported early on Wednesday morning (17 April) by rb.no that a footballer had been involved in a car collision in Lillestrøm, Norway.

Graham Smyth has reported that the man in his 20s is 23-year-old Leeds goalkeeper Klaesson.

He said: “Leeds have confirmed to the YEP that it was Klaesson.

“Terge Marstad, a police operations manager, told Romerikes Blad that the driver was able to stand and did not appear to be injured, but was taken to Akershus University Hospital in an ambulance as a precaution and was questioned there by police.

“The YEP also understands that Klaesson did not sustain any injuries in the crash, involving his BMW M5 Cs.”

It is understood that while there’s no suspicion of drink driving, the Leeds goalkeeper has had his driving licence taken from him and he’s been charged with a crime that could lead to a year in prison.

The YEP added: “Another Norwegian media outlet, Verdens Gang, reports that the driver is charged with violating Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act, which can carry a penalty of up to one year in prison.”

What is the goalkeeper situation at Leeds United?

The Whites signed Klaesson in July 2021 as he signed a four-year deal with the club as they paid a fee in the region of £1.6m.

He has made just three appearances for the club and two of them have come this season [FotMob]. This came after Illan Meslier’s red card v Preston North End and an unfortunate injury to Karl Darlow.

Last season Klaesson made his Premier League debut as he replaced the Frenchman away to Wolves.

This season the undoubted number one has been Meslier who has made 41 Championship appearances out of a possible 43. In that time he has kept 18 clean sheets and conceded just 31 goals, according to FotMob.

Darlow has made just four appearances since signing for Leeds in July 2023 in an injury-hit campaign.

There is a slight concern given the performances of Meslier in the Premier League last time around which may see a new shot-stopper through the doors at Elland Road over the summer.

In other Leeds news, the club have held talks with one player’s reps over a summer transfer to Elland Road.
