Fan-favorite comedy Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle has just received its Certified Fresh status. The new rating comes right after the film celebrated its 20th anniversary.

2004's Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle was the first installment in the Harold & Kumar franchise. It was directed by Danny Leiner with a script by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, two of the creators of Cobra Kai. The first sequel, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, arrived in 2008, followed by 2011's A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas. The series, which stars John Cho, Kal Penn, and Neil Patrick Harris as a fictional version of himself, has just received an important critical rating: it was officially deemed Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

The review aggregator website declared the comedy as Certified Fresh and it has a 75% score from 150 reviews. One review from Deep Focus Review notes, "At once smart and stupid, it’s an odd mix that works just enough to make up for its failures." A review posted on The Advocate highlighted the film's take on Asian stereotypes: "What I especially liked about Harold and Kumar was its systematic confrontation and denial of all the Asian male stereotypes I’ve come to despise."

Aside from its critical score, the audience seems to have enjoyed the film as well, giving it an 80% score out of 250,000 ratings. When it premiered in 2004, the film grossed $23.9 million worldwide on a budget of $9 million (via Box Office Mojo). That was enough to spawn several sequels, and there is interest in continuing the franchise.

There Is Interest in Harold & Kumar 4

Conversations about Harold & Kumar 4 have been going on for years, but so far, no official confirmation has come from the studio. However, the cast and the creative team are interested in making it happen. Kal Penn gave an update on Harold & Kumar 4 early this year, noting that noting is in the works at the moment.

"We would all love to do one. I'm sure we'll do one at some point," he told ComicBook. "I think the guys were busy with Cobra Kai, and I think they have two or three other shows and movies. I was working on Designated Survivor for a few years and then a couple of other projects. So, I think we were just hoping that the timeline aligns and that we find the right concept. That's how I put it artistically. We all really want to make it happen, but I don't have any updates for you yet."
