YOUR LOCAL NEWS LEADER AND WEATHER AUTHORITY FOR 67+ YEARS! "Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the first telecast from KFEQ-TV in St. Joseph." Those were the words of announcer Wally Johnson at 2:30 p.m. on September 27, 1953. That was the moment viewers in the Midland Empire got their first glimpse of broadcast television emanating from St. Joseph, Missouri. The broadcast consisted of an introductory program followed by several offerings from the CBS and Dumont Networks, movies and some live shows including local news, weather and sports. Throughout the next 60 years, KFEQ-TV would continue to expand and grow as many new and exciting changes occurred. The 1960s would see the addition of network color and an ABC affiliation. In 1969, the station was sold and the call letters were changed to KQTV, as it is known today. In the following decades, KQTV would see several advancements in technology from cameras and equipment to the green screen for weather forecasts. The industry-wide trend of fewer locally produced programs gave way to increased syndicated programming, which offered more ABC shows in the 1970s and 1980s.In August of 1992, Live at Five went on air and has become the longest running news title at KQ2. Today, KQ2 continues to lead the community in news, weather, and local entertainment across its morning, 5PM, 6PM and 10PM newscasts. In 2009, the digital broadcast conversion found the need to truncate the tower to 508 feet from the original 750 feet to accommodate new digital transmission equipment. The station's first digital broadcast aired in June of 2009. Today, KQTV reaches more than 100,000 households in 32 counties throughout northwest Missouri, northeast Kansas and the southeast tip of Nebraska. With a broadcast radius of 50 miles and more than one million page views each month, KQ2.com in addition to our News and Weather mobile apps offer a variety of ways to access local news, weather, sports, school closings, coupons, community events, and much more.
