Jackson, John Turturro, Brad Dourif, Tim Robbins Flipper works at a firm, has a wife, and a daughter A new recruit named Angela, an Italian White woman is brought in which at first displeases him since he's the only black hire on staff She proves capable though; at home she cooks and takes her of her brothers and father since the mother is dead As time goes on both Flipper and Angela start a forbidden affair which of course stirs up talk and generates hostility because of their skin color It's one thing if hes married but both of them are constrained by a society that doesn't approve of integration Flipper is used to the racial slurs growing up his whole life, Angela has never experienced this kind of treatment and she's swimming in dangerous waters Lots of talk and debate about what's considered right, acceptable when it comes to mixed relationships Are there any good men or women? How many are trusting? How many stay out of committing crimes, being imprisoned, or actually landing successful careers? Who stays with their partner based on skin color? Is character more important than the physical exterior? A lot of people are getting with the times while others have backwards thinking still Perhaps color has everyone on edge cause they cant relate to each other Flipper and Angela are knee deep in social pressure but are determined to combat it Maybe this love conquers everything can't always suceeed The movie has lots of seething realities about this subject addressing sociopolitical themes It changes things for better or worse Spike Lee directs with timely subject matter even if it's ambitious to a fault It's long but makes us think daring us to be interested Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
