Summary
I really wanted to see Serena and June as lesbians in a modern setting--pre-Gilead. I wanted them to meet, feel an attraction to each other, be single and unattached, and see where that took me. I also wanted the story set before the Sons of Jacob toppled the US government--way before, when they were starting to spread their message. Serena is a feminist, but her mother's character is based on the Anita Bryant/Phyllis Schlafly type of anti-feminist, conservative mouthpiece. And Serena will go to great lengths to stop her mother from getting her message of conservatism, racism and anti-feminism out there.
The story is complete and I'll be posting chapters every few days.

Summary
This story picks up right where "We know what we are but not what we might be", leaves off. Nichole, daughter of June Osborne, has been kidnapped. June has been living with Serena and her daughter Hannah in Nova Scotia, where Serena brought them when she got them all out of Gilead. It was revealed in Part 1, Midnight, that Serena had been an undercover spy on a long term, deep cover assignment in Gilead. After 16 years of undercover work, Serena's heart intervened, and she fell for June, her assigned Handmaid. June asked her to escape with her and Serena agreed, Now that they are free, Serena is readjusting from her life in Gilead to trying to come back to the person she once was--one of Canada's top spies. The persona of Mrs. Waterford--volatile and nasty on her better days--has become somewhat ingrained in her, and it's taking a lot of psychological counseling and intervention to try to keep her on an even keel. The couple finally seem to be on solid footing, and ready to start their life together, when tragedy strikes. It may be helpful to read Part 1 and Part 2 of the Series first

The title is from Shakespeare's Hamlet, act 4, scene 5 This particular line definitely seems to echo the theme of uncertainty that pervades the play. Both Ophelia and Hamlet are acutely aware of, and tormented by, their present selves but are anxious about the vast and unknowable potentials of their futures.
Serena, June and Hannah have escaped Gilead, and are living in Nova Scotia under new identities. This story is about pain and healing, anger and forgiveness, despair and hope. Before they can move forward, they have to heal. But is it even possible?

Summary
This picks up at Season Two Episode 13 when Serena Joy and the Commander return home after Serena has had her finger severed for possessing and reading aloud from a book. The fact that the two women can become co-conspirators struck me as astounding. Their relationship is truly a marvel of layered richness, treachery, loathing and even sometimes, respect.
