The Women Of 'Harry Potter': Then And Now

The Women Of 'Harry Potter': Then And Now

While they're instantly recognizable as their iconic characters, the ladies of the Harry Potter films have grown up quite a bit! A decade after the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was released, we thought it would be fun to see where the actresses who played "Hermione," "Ginny," "Luna," and more are now. Emma Watson is arguably the most well-known of the franchise's young actors, but does she still look like "Hermione" today? And how about famous actresses like Julie Walters and Helena Bonham Carter— how much have they changed since their Harry Potter days? Click through the slides to see what the Harry Potter actresses look like today!

Harry Potter fans grew up with Emma Watson playing "Hermione Granger"! Watson's portrayal of the brightest witch of her age instantly endeared her to fans. If you're wondering where the actress behind "Hermione" is today, she's looking all grown up and still has a successful career!

Emma Watson craves something more exotic, as there's a specific type of cuisine she enjoys most! The actress known for films like Harry Potter and Little Women has shared that she loves Mexican food, mentioning to Marie Claire that she makes an "amazing egg tortilla."

"Ginny Weasley" became more important to the Harry Potter series as it went on. Portrayed by Bonnie Wright, "Ron Weasley's" sister (and "Harry's" eventual love interest!) first played a major role in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Where is the actress who played "Ginny" today?

Bonnie Wright has not made many public appearances since Harry Potter. While she lives in Los Angeles, she hasn't been seen acting for several years now. However, she has contributed to some website blogs and has a book coming out next year called Go Gently, focused on sustainable living.

As "Cho Chang," Katie Leung made a memorable impression on viewers— as well as on "Harry" himself, seeing as he had a crush on her! Let's see what the actress who played her has been up to..

Leung has continued on with her career, taking on a variety of interesting roles! The Scottish actress can most recently be seen in projects like the drama miniseries Roadkill and the film Locked Down, and voices the character of "Caitlyn" in the Netflix animated series Arcane.

"Luna Lovegood" is another one of the fan favourite female characters to come from the Harry Potter series! The quirky Ravenclaw who was portrayed by Evanna Lynch on-screen first appears in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, quickly befriending "Harry" and the gang.

Evanna Lynch is showing just how magical the vegan lifestyle can be! Known for her role as "Luna Lovegood" in the Harry Potter films, Lynch became vegan in 2015 because of her love of animals, a decision which aligned with her personal values. She has also launched a vegan lifestyle podcast called Chickpeeps!

"Fleur Delacour" is the enchanting Beauxbatons student who was introduced during the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Her name means "flower of the court" in French, and it's fitting that she was played by French actress Clémence Poésy!

Poesy is active in the film industry still today, appearing in a variety of projects in both French and English. She appeared in the blockbuster Tenet as "Barbara," and is currently filming the period drama series The Essex Serpent. She is currently unmarried, but has two children.

Known for her rebellious personality and brightly coloured hair to match, "Nymphadora Tonks" is able to freely change her appearance. In the Harry Potter movies, she was portrayed by Natalia Tena, who is somewhat of a chameleon herself...

Tena is not only an actress— she's also a musician! The star behind "Tonks" has been singing in the eclectic five-piece band Molotov Jukebox since 2014. After Harry Potter ended, she appeared in another popular fantasy series, seen as "Osha" in multiple episodes of Game of Thrones. She will also feature in the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4, playing "Katia"!

"Professor Sybill Trelawney" may only be a supporting character, but she's certainly a memorable one! "Harry's" eccentric Divination teacher first appeared in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, played by well-known British actress Emma Thompson.

Emma Thompson is another star who's passionate about the pixie! With a shaggy salt and pepper look, her do is funky and fabulous.

"Bellatrix Lestrange" is one of the most fearsome villains in the Harry Potter universe! Helena Bonham Carter played the witch, who is known for being a devoted follower to "Lord Voldemort" and possessing dark magic.

Bonham Carter is well known for being a character actress, completely immersing herself into whatever persona she takes on! Shortly after her Harry Potter days, she appeared in the film adaptation of iconic musical Les Miserables as "Madame Thenardier," and in 2019, she took on the role of "Princess Margaret" in The Crown. She can be seen in last year's Netflix film Enola Holmes as the title character's mother, "Eudoria," a role she is set to reprise for the sequel!

"Petunia Dursley" is "Harry's" awful aunt, who he was forced to live with for years along with uncle "Vernon" and cousin "Dudley"! She was portrayed by Irish actress Fiona Shaw, who has certainly come a long way from Harry Potter today...

Shaw is another star who has enjoyed a successful career after the film franchise came to an end, known for more than just playing "Petunia"! She has been seen in projects such as the horror anthology Channel Zero and the period drama Colette. And in 2020, Shaw even received an Emmy nomination for one of her most memorable roles to date, "Carolyn" in Killing Eve.

The constantly pink-clad and kitty-loving "Dolores Umbridge" of the Harry Potter series was somehow more hateable than "You Know Who" himself. The "Defense Against the Dark Arts" teacher and Headmistress struck fear and anguish into the hearts of her students with her vicious and cruel punishments and unjust rules. See if anyone else on this list makes you hate them more...

Staunton boasts a pretty substantial filmography, and has taken on several exciting roles following Harry Potter! She played "Maud Bagshaw" in the Downton Abbey film, and voices "Aunt Lucy" in the Paddington movies. Her biggest role to date might be her next though, with Staunton set to portray "Queen Elizabeth II" in seasons 5 and 6 of British drama The Crown!

"Molly Weasley" is the protective and caring mother of "Ron" and his many siblings, including "Ginny"! In the Harry Potter films, she was portrayed by legendary British actress Julie Walters.

Walters received one of the most prestigious honours in 2017, with Queen Elizabeth II officially making her Dame Julie Walters! She has also reprised her Mamma Mia! role of "Rosie" in the film's 2018 sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and appeared in projects like Paddington and Mary Poppins Returns.

"Professor Minerva McGonagall" is one of the most well-known characters in the franchise, especially since she is the Head of Gryffindor! It was British actress Maggie Smith who brought the stern but kind "McGonagall" to life, and she has continued an exciting career since.

Even the great dame of Downton Abbey has rocked a wig. As you can see from the picture above, Smith's hair is quite short. In order to get the famous updo that "Violet" wears in the show, a wig was needed.
