      Critics Consensus

Boosted by Meryl Streep's charismatic performance as Julia Child, Julie and Julia is a light, but fairly entertaining culinary comedy.

Audience Member Absolutely pleasant Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/17/24 Full Review Tanisha R This was like watching 2 different movies at one time and they never seemed to connect. I didn't like Meryl Streep's performance, her voice started to bother me as it went on. It seemed phony. I found the Amy Adams story to be more interesting but I didn't fully understand why she was cooking and blogging. Also working a full time job and living in a sad apartment where it seemed that she wouldn't be able to afford this experiment in the first place. I didn't understand the temporary break up at the end at all. The food definitely should have been highlighted more especially from the Julia Child side. Overall I didn't hate this movie, it was just extremely disjointed. Pick a story and tell it to the fullest please. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review Jeff M This is one of my very favorite comedies of the 2000s and one of my top Meryl Streep performances ever - which is saying an awful lot. I can't recall ever seeing a performance filled with such joy and joie de vivre - she is absolutely luminous, and her spirit practically jumps off of the screen. Many complained that the Julie part doesn't work, and while certainly not as involving or resonant as Julia, it still contains many wonderful moments. Stanley Tucci is magnificent as Child's husband and deserved a lot more attention and respect than he got. Directed by the late Nora Ephron, this will always remain to me her crowning achievement. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/24 Full Review Madie R I think this is my 2nd favourite Meryl Streep movie. Amy Adams and Meryl Streep shine in the main roles. The story makes you laugh and makes you want to get in the kitchen and cook. "...and let me say this: is there anything better than butter? Think it over: every time you taste something that's delicious beyond imagining and you say, "What is in this?", the answer is always going to be, Butter. The day there's a meteorite heading toward the earth and we have thirty days to live, I am going to spend it eating butter. Here's my final words on the subject, you can never have too much, butter." Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/24 Full Review Timothy D Streep is radiant and a perfect counterpart to Adam's grounded take on the mundane modern life. This film is overflowing with charm. It finds joy in the everyday things with unexpected relevance. I expected to dislike this movie, but after watching it, Julie and Julia holds a special place in my heart. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/22/23 Full Review Alexa V Her voice gave me a headache and the movie was horrible, boring, and bland. Deborah Ross The Spectator [Amy Adams'] half of the film plays like a below-par rom-com, so here's the question: is the good half good enough? Probably, yes, but then I would watch Meryl rearranging a closet. It's just the way I am. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Ed Koch The Atlantic Julie & Julia was pure entertainment. The title of this film should be amended to Julie, Julia, & Nora. Nora Ephron's script and direction, along with the performances of Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, add up to one joyous picture. Jan 17, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Overall, a delicious film. Rated: B Sep 12, 2017 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The film contains wonderful performances but loses our attention when food and the love of cooking are no longer the central themes. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz A supremely satisfying performance dished up by that indefatigable Streep.
