Wolves may have to wait a little longer to make Julen Lopetegui their new manager as the Spaniard attends to a family matter in his homeland.

The former Spain and Real Madrid boss, who was sacked by Sevilla last week, is the clear front-runner to take the reins at Molineux following Bruno Lage’s departure on October 2.

Sportsmail understands Lopetegui is interested in moving to the Premier League but any appointment is unlikely to take place until later in the week, with Lopetegui still in Spain.

Wolves will be led by caretakers Steve Davis and James Collins against Nottingham Forest

Wolves could be in a rush to appoint him before next Saturday's game with Nottingham Forest

Under-18 boss Steve Davies and Under-21 coach James Collins were in charge for Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Wolves and the pair will lead training again in the early part of the week. Depending on the pace of negotiations with Lopetegui, the pair could even be in the dugout again against Nottingham Forest at Molineux on Saturday.

If Lopetegui takes over at Molineux, he will work again with Ruben Neves, after the pair shared a productive spell together at FC Porto. Neves, the current Wolves captain, has called Lopetegui ‘a special coach’.

Lopetegui was Wolves owners Fosun’s first choice to become manager when they took control in 2016, but instead he accepted an offer to become Spanish national coach. But the 56-year-old has long been keen to move to the Premier League.
