BIOGRAPHY OF JUDI DENCH

Judith Olivia Dench, known as “Judi”, was born in 1934 in Heworth, in the province of York, to an Irish mother and a doctor. He attended a Quaker high school and in the mid-fifties he was tempted by the theater, discovered thanks to the work of his parents, in particular his father, a doctor of some companies. At first she would like to be a set designer, but succumbs to the fascination of acting and enrolls at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, where as a classmate she has Vanessa Redgrave. Already in 1957 is Ofelia in a representation ofHamlet, is in 1960 is Juliet in an installation by Romeo & Juliet by Zeffirelli. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1961, and in the following years everyone notices his talent. His film debut dates back to 1964, when she is a supporting partner in The third secret of Charles Crichton; already the following year he wins a BAFTA as best young promise for At four in the morning … two men, two women. In 1968 she played Cabaret’s Sally Bowles in the theater, a role she would later play a few years after Liza Minnelli’s fortune in the cinema.

The seventies and eighties were filled with a variety of BBC TV movies and theatrical satisfactions, among which there is a highly praised one Macbeth starring in 1976, sharing the stage with Ian McKellen, and in 1988 directed by Much Ado About Nothing, in which he directed Kenneth Branagh and Samantha Bond. Always in 1988 she was awarded the title of Dame by the Queen, the equivalent of the male knighthood. In this period the only important role in the cinema is that of the writer Eleanor in Room with a view (1985) by James Ivory.

The unexpected relaunch on the big screen comes when Judi agrees to take on the role of M, superior of the James BondPierce Brosnan in 007 – GoldenEye (1995): M has never been a woman, and her characterization is fun, so much so that the actress will return to that role, again alongside Brosnan in Tomorrow never dies (1997), The world is not enough (1999) and Death can wait (2002), then alongside Daniel Craig in Casino Royale (2006), Quantum of Solace (2008) and Skyfall (2012).

Meanwhile, the first film awards in America begin to arrive: his Queen Victoria in My queen (1997) of John Madden procures them a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for best protagonist. However, the statuette comes to her as the best supporting character with another queen, Elizabeth I, in the great success of Shakespeare in Love (1998), again by Madden.

Dame Judi Dench then he begins at an old age to have fun even in the cinema: he appears in Chocolat (2000, Oscar nomination for a supporting role), voices a cow in the Disney cartoon Cows to the rescue (2004) and intimidates one of his fans, Vin Diesel, agreeing to appear in the science fiction action of The Chronicles of Riddick (2004). He approaches the statuette yet other times, in Iris – A true love (2001), in the ironic (and theatrical ambiance) Lady Henderson Presents (2005) and in the clash of skill with Cate Blanchett, teacher with a terrible secret, in Diary of a scandal (2006). After this happy period, small roles follow in important productions such as J. Edgar (2011) of Clint Eastwood, but a degenerative maculopathy forces her to sip with the public. However, the disease does not keep her away from either his seventh Oscar nomination for the bitter comedy Philomena (2013) of Stephen Frears.

Still teaming up with John Madden, we’ve seen her in the ensemble cast of Marigold Hotel (2011) and its sequel Return to the Marigold Hotel (2015).
