Take a Step of Faith

He speaks to our hearts and guides us

Scripture

For we walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV)

I am so excited that you have joined me for this study! I believe the question, “What is God’s will for me?” is something most of us have asked, and this is natural. God created each one of us with special gifts and talents. And I believe most of us want to know God’s will for our lives—what decisions to make, what opportunities to take, or how to walk out the dreams He has put in our hearts. Whatever it is, it’s probably going to require us to take a step of faith in some way.

Second Corinthians 5:7 says, For we walk by faith, not by sight. This means that we live according to what God’s Word says and not by what we think or feel. We believe that He speaks to our hearts and guides us.

More than 45 years ago, when I sensed in my heart that I was called by God to teach His Word, I saw no evidence in the natural that it would become a reality. But I took a step of faith and invited twelve women to a Bible study. All twelve said yes!

My first step worked, so I took a second step, and so on. I have taken thousands of steps of faith since that time, but I would not be where I am in ministry today had I not taken that first step.

You may wonder what happens if you take a step and it doesn’t work. You never need to be afraid of making a mistake…or afraid God won’t help you get back on the right path. He loves you and is always willing to help you if you ask Him.

God is bigger than our mistakes. Even when we step out and it’s not the right time or thing to do, He will help us get back on the right path as we stay in faith.

I often say that you cannot drive a parked car. As you seek to find God’s will for your life, my advice is to get your life out of “park.” Start moving in some direction. After you take an initial step of faith, you will get more definite direction from God and things will become even clearer. God told Abraham to go to a place that He would show him, but Abraham had to go before anything else could happen! (Genesis 12:1)

If you’re like me, you’d like to know God’s entire plan for your life before you ever begin. And while He may show us the bigger picture at times, He usually asks us to take one step at a time…and then trust Him with the next one.

Prayer Starter

Father, thank you for the amazing plans You have for my life! I ask You to speak to my heart, and help me know which way to go, as Your Word says You will (Psalm 32:8). Then give me the courage to step out in faith, knowing You are with me and will continue to direct my steps (Proverbs 16:9). As I begin this study, I present my life to You—all my gifts, talents, desires, everything—and I ask You to let this be the beginning of a stronger walk of faith with You. In Jesus’ name. amen.
