Just for the mix that fades "Find the cost of Freedom" into "Ohio", this paean to Neil Young's southern sensibilities is perhaps the most haunting conceptual tour he ever put out. The lost soundtrack to a lost movie, this music comes to us from the bottom of a bourbon glass, darkly, yet strikes raw nerves consistently with its disorganization and force. This is the way "Alabama" caught Lynrd Skynrd's attention, and its vignettes from deep in the reverb are unforgettable. How beyond ordinary sensibilities Neil had to be to convey the auditory sense of KKK night riders closing in on the addled listener with such authority is beyond comprehension. If you find it, get it. (There are digitized bootlegs out there--you'll have to combine the "Find the Cost" and "Ohio" into one track yourself, but such is the digital world)
This mid-70s compilation includes rare recordings & popular tracks from the mid-60s through the early 70s, basically Buffalo Springfield through the Harvest album. Until now, it has been unavailable in CD format, so I was very happy to see this album released recently.
As I listened, it seemed to me like this might be a cheap knock-off of the original LP, i.e., dubbed from vinyl rather than from original recordings. The sound was "tinny" at times, muffled at other times. It is perhaps my selective recall of how the original LP sounded. But the fact that this product was produced in Argentina rather than through a domestic organization (i.e., Reprise Records or Neil Young Archives) says a lot about quality control.
The duplication of the original artwork parallels the sound--much of it "appears identical" but it is very difficult to read.
I would not consider this product to be a "collector's item," especially if the upcoming availability of other Neil Young recordings overlaps the period covered in Journey Through the Past (i.e., Archives II--originally promised in 2009 and routinely delayed since then) The recording quality of archival Neil Young products of the past decade or two is much superior to this version of JTTP, So, "buyer beware" ... as this recording reflects the scope of Neil Young's original product--but the sound quality is not up to the standards maintained by the artist in his re-releases or archival products. .

I never saw the film but did have the album when it was on the store shelves in the 70's. It turned ou to be one of my favorite albums the more I listened to it. This album grows on you, I would sure like to see it listed again but in a cd format, or higher quality format. Now that the BluRay & High Def DVD war is over I would love to see the film on BluRay. It is one I would purchase at a reasonable rate.
Packaging is nice and professional; however, the sound quality is unacceptable on this German import - it sounds like it was mastered from a beat-up vinyl record. Too bad, as there are some very interesting alternate versions of well-known Neil Young tracks on this long-unavailable album including versions of Alabam, Southern Man and Find the Cost of Freedom/Ohio. I imagine the best route to take for the real audiophile is to search out a vinyl copy in very good condition, as this is undoubtedly one of the worst sounding cd's in my collection. It is generally acknowledged that Journey Through the Past will probably never see the light of day in a digitally remastered format so, at this point, 'you get what you get.'
I own the vinyl which i bought years ago when it came out. I love this album and long ago digitized it and put it in my Itunes. I recently purchased a Brennan and have been putting my favorites especially remastered versions on it at Cd quality level, there is a difference. I decided to see if Journey through the past was available. It was and I ordered it immediately and waited the month for delivery. I fed it to the Brennan. It didn't recognize it and showed 8 cuts instead of the 14 that showed on the packaging and burned to Itunes. The problem was the cut Words which glitched on itunes and was the cutoff on the eventual Brennan. burn. No dirt, no smears, nothing obvious so probably a manufacturing defect. I was going to return it but after looking here I realized people tried to warn me, I'll buy it again if Neil approves one. I know her's a sound fanatic.
I'm a Neil Young completest, so I had to have this once I learned it was out there. Paid way too much to get it from Germany. Typical Neil, a little odd. No songs any old Neil fan won't have heard before but an interesting presentation.
Made in Argentina, with some Mexican distribution connection, the fine print says and the sound quality is appalling. I already knew this release was a patchwork kind of thing when it came out. But the poor reproduction here is something else.
The terribly tinny sound quality is not excusable in the new century. It's not even bootleg quality. Making a digital recording off the record should not sound this bad. It's as if a portable player has been used and an MP3 recording device has been put up against the speaker.
The price is outrageous for something which, at best, acts as a guide to what the album is really like. The sellers are taking advantage of hard core fans who justifiably need this LP in their collection.

Owned this on vinyl when it first came out in 1972 but somehow lost it over the years. Sound quality is actually better than I remembered and I agree with another reviewer here that there are some good live versions. 'Find The Cost Of Freedom', 'Ohio' and 'Southern Man', are all great.
