Thanos could be making a big return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe according to actor Josh Brolin.

Famously, Josh Brolin played Thanos in the MCU, serving as the antagonist of the Avengers movies Infinity War and Endgame. More recently, Brolin reprised the role by voicing Thanos variants in the second season of the animated series What If...? on Disney+. Speaking with ComicBook.com to promote the upcoming release of Dune: Part Two, Brolin was asked about the possibility of bringing back Thanos in the MCU. The actor teased how he's heard chatter about his live-action Thanos returning, noting how that's separate from the animated variants. He also reacted to learning that Thanos has officially been killed off in the MCU more than any other villain.

"You know, I hear kind of like through the grapevine, that they're gonna bring him back," Brolin said. "And there's the What If...? series and that's a different kind of Thanos and all that. But I don't know in the Marvel world whether they're going to bring him back, but I didn't know that he was the most killed-off Marvel villain ... You learn something new every day."

Thanos Could Easily Return if Marvel Studios Wants Him To

With the many deaths of Thanos, the numbers add up when they're broken down. He technically died twice in Avengers: Endgame, then multiple variants have been killed off in the What If...? series, as well as the multiverse-traversing sequel film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With the upcoming Avengers sequels also expected to further explore the MCU's multiverse, the door seems to be wide open for Brolin to return as Thanos once again on the big screen.

"We've kind of bookended this thing after 10 years," Brolin previously said of seemingly ending his run as Thanos with Avengers: Endgame, per the Jess Cagle Show. "I was so happy, and I loved being involved in [the Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame] so much because that wasn't the intention when I first got involved. The whole Thanos character, it was more of a cameo and they liked the character so much. They had never felt like they had a villain that was substantial enough for what they were creating and then I think they felt like they found it and then there were two movies that kind of revolved around it. It was a lot of fun and it worked out for them very nicely."

While it remains to be seen if Josh Brolin will return as Thanos in the MCU, the actor can be seen on the big screen this year with his role in the upcoming sequel Dune: Part Two. The movie is set to be released in movie theaters on March 1, 2024. Brolin will also appear in the upcoming comedy Brothers alongside Peter Dinklage, Brendan Fraser, Glenn Close, and Taylour Paige.
