Bournemouth 1-2 Sheffield Wednesday: Jordan Rhodes' late winner seals points for Owls

Jordan Rhodes scores
Jordan Rhodes' late winner was his first goal since the opening day of the season

Jordan Rhodes' last-minute winner secured a sixth win in nine games for Sheffield Wednesday as Bournemouth lost their fourth Championship game in succession.

Callum Paterson gave the Owls a deserved first-half lead when he pounced on a poor Jack Stacey pass across the penalty area and his weak stab goalwards somehow crept under Asmir Begovic.

But Bournemouth were much improved in the second half and Junior Stanislas levelled from the penalty spot after Sam Surridge was brought down by Sam Hutchinson.

But with the hosts chasing a winner, Wednesday hit them on the break as Rhodes headed home Kadeem Harris' cross from the right at the far post.

The win moves Wednesday up to third from bottom, three points off Birmingham City who are just above the relegation zone, while Bournemouth stay sixth.

Wednesday could have been 2-0 up inside the first 10 minutes were it not for two good saves by Begovic - the Cherries keeper used his legs to stop Elias Kachunga after he broke into the box in the first minute following good build-up play and then tipped Barry Bannan's powerful left-footed effort over the bar from the edge of the box.

The Cherries' best chance of the half came when Arnaut Danjuma's effort from 12 yards was well blocked by Sam Hutchinson while the returning David Brooks went close from distance before Wednesday took the lead.

Jason Tindall made a triple change at half-time with Stacey, Dominic Solanke and Jack Wilshere - who was making his first league start since re-joining the Cherries - all departing as Adam Smith, Jefferson Lerma and Surridge all came on and the hosts stepped up their game.

Surridge was brought down for the penalty after a long ball over the top of the Wednesday defence and Lewis Cook had a deflected effort tipped wide by Keiren Westwood shortly after the equaliser.

Brooks forced a good save from close range from Westwood with 15 minutes left after a long ball over the top and the Cherries were incensed with seven minutes to go when Chey Dunkley was booked rather than sent off by referee Andy Woolmer after bringing down Surridge with the striker seemingly through on goal.

Wednesday took advantage with Rhodes' late winner, but it was almost cancelled out in stoppage time when Massimo Luongo swung an air shot at a clearance and Lerma nipped to shoot from inside the box, but Westwood did well to bat the effort away.

AFC Bournemouth manager Jason Tindall told BBC Radio Solent:

"We're going through a real difficult moment, you can see there's a lot of players lacking a bit of confidence, lacking a bit of belief.

"I think we've got quite a few players under the age of 23 and I think when you concede a goal like we did as the first goal that you can't really plan or account for, that sort of almost highlights where some of these guys are at the minute.

"Second half I felt we came out and delivered a much better performance, but with the addition of Ben Pearson and a couple more days training, and Shane Long - these type of characters with the experience they've got will certainly help us."

Sheffield Wednesday interim manager Neil Thompson told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I'm delighted for the players because they've put a right shift in.

"We thought first half if we played aggressively and positively. We could get at them, they've had a bad little run themselves, we thought we could cause them a few problems and I thought we did.

"We should have been probably more than a the one goal up at half time and then second half we had to dig in as they've got quality players.

"They had a bit of pressure, unfortunately we conceded one, but to show the character to come back right at the end, Kads (Kadeem Harris) has not been in the team and for him to come on and put a great ball into the box for Rhodes at the far stick, I'm delighted."
