Tenor Jon Thorsteinsson (October 11, 1951, Ólafsfjörður, Iceland) began his musical education at an early age with flute and piano. Initially, Jon studied nursing in Norway. In his second year, his voice was discovered by singer Aase Solbakken. With her he performed in the hospital, where they sang songs and duets from operettes. Aase urged Jon to take singing lessons with Professor Marit Isene at the Norske Musikhøghskole (NMS). Less than a year later, Jon decided to change his life and become a singer.

After two years of study at the NMS, he moved to Aarhus, Denmark, where he studied for three years at Det Jydske Music Conservatory. After his years in Denmark Jon took lessons with Arrigo Pola in Modena, Italy for a year. Since 1980 Jon has been living and working in the Netherlands.He sang in the choir of the Dutch Opera for two years and was a member of the Dutch Opera Studio from 1982 to 1985. Until 1998, Jon worked as a soloist with the Dutch Opera and sang no less than 40 roles. However, his passion and priority has always been oratorio and song. From 1986 to 1995 he studied with the internationally renowned singer Aafje Heynis.

In 1981, Jon won first prize at the Royal Christian Oratorio Singers Association.

In addition to his performing work Jon has always given voice lessons. Since 1993 he has increasingly involved himself with vocal training and voice pedagogy. In order to further specialize he followed courses at the Institut für angewandte Lichtenberg ® Stimmphysiologie with Gisela Rohmert from 1998 to 2003 and from 2008 to 2010 .

Since 1985, Jon has been giving master classes all over the world. He worked in Germany, Iceland, Denmark, America, the United Nations, Belgium and the Netherlands.

In the context of ‘The Jette Parker Young Artists Programme’ Jon Thorsteinsson was visiting lecturer at ‘The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden from 2009 to 2012 .

Since 2008, Jon works as a singing professor at the Utrecht Conservatory of Music.
