I used this VHS tape movie for home entertainment. The picture and audio quality are excellent. I also like the case the VHS movie came in, it shows photos of the actors in the film.

It's disgusting what the big cattlemen did to innocent homesteaders and small ranchers in 1890's Wyoming. It was murder on demand. Cattlemen allies in the media (newspapers) and state government officials looked the other way, in fact, helped coverup the vicious crimes. The classic 1953 Alan Ladd film "Shane" was based on the story of what became known as The Johnson County War, and it was far worse than that portrayed in the film. The book is heavy and detail so I did some skimming to get through it. After finishing the read a thought occurred to me, that maybe I don't want to eat steak anymore.

This movie (althought the names have been changed) is based on real people and real events of the last days of the Wild West. In general, the storyline runs pretty close to actual historical events... Tom Berringer has to be one of the best "cowboy" actors around, and proves himself again in this one. All of the lead actors do a great job, and the story never drags... the suspense builds and you know something big is coming... when the final showdown happens, it's not your typical shoot'em-up, and the hero is left standing scenerio. He has his work cut out for him, and it's all very realistic and believable, with no outrageous special effects, or people being blown backwards and upside down from a pistol shot.
You'll want to watch this movie over and over... each time you do, you'll realize new things about the old west, and you'll find yourself tinkering on which side of the law you'd be on if you were in Wyoming in those days. It's a very thought provoking, and political movie, and it captures the mindset of those times real well. Great scenery, great action, great plot, great historical accuracy, great cast, just an all-around great movie. I expect this one will be TV for years to come, but I'd recommend this one to anyone who enjoys westerns, American history, political evolution, or action-adventure.
PS. It's not just a guy movie either, there's plenty of heart-aches, tears, betrayal, domestic violence, female bravery, love triangles, and romance mixed into these 3-hours as well... anyone who enjoys soap opera's will have their hands full with the various romantic sub-plots.

This is a very great movie about the war between the homestead settlers and the wealthy cattle ranchers. They wanted to get rid of the people that settled in Johnson County, Wyoming, because of greed, influence and power. In 1892, still fighting over land after they took the land from the Native American Indians and forward. Tom Berenger (Cain Hammett) Luke Perry (Harry Hammett) and Adam Storke (Dale Hammett) did an excellent acting along with Dale's son Joey Hammett and Cain's German shepherd dog. The Hammett brothers are all great actors and handsome. Also give credit to the dog and horses, they are all beautiful animals along with the beautiful Scenic. Great that the Hammett brothers and the people stood up to the cattle barons. They stood up for what they believe was right. The ending was very emotional and sad, when they released Cain's Horse. Understand it is base on a true story. This movie will stay in my collection and watch it from time to time.

I saw this on cable westerns channel and could never get through the entire movie because of constant interruptions. I decided to purchase it on dvd and was happy that I did. It has an awesome storyline. It makes you wonder if such happenings like land grabbing and forcing families off their farms and cold blooded killings and hangings really did take place. Well I say it probably did. This country was built on many likely and unlikely principles, some good some not so good. If we can take lands from the native American Indians, then I say it was probably true that it happened to the early settlers and their families who had a legal right to the lands they occupied. Greed. Not much has changed in this life we live now, it's just done differently. But killing is killing any way you look at it.

This miniseries is unique as it is not your standard western. Much more time is devoted to acquainting the viewer with the main characters depicting the homesteaders, their families and their lives. In this way, the viewer becomes more intimate with the storyline to the point where one starts to experience the emotions, the setbacks and the trials and tribulations the Wyoming homesteaders must have encountered ( early 1890's) in their battles against the aggressive tactics of the cattle barons.
The movie takes a while to build up to a crescendo but, it's worth waiting for. The cinematography is excellent and is coupled with very good sound. The acting is excellent and Tom Berenger excels in his role.
I watched the DVD in three one hour stints and as a result gained greater entertainment value, savoured the acting more and I became more emotionally involved with the plight of the homesteaders who had no wish to part with their land.

I finally received my video "Johnson County War" a real well written western that displays authentic characters and scenery throughout. If you like REAL westerns, this one is for you. My only problem was getting it. I ordered it in October and finally got it in December. There was a huge mix up with what videos were in warehouse storage and I called constantly to get information. This is the first and only time I have had any trouble with Amazon. I am pleased with my purchase and I completely recommend it.

This is a great western. It is based on the true story of Wyoming cattle barons trying take land from homesteaders. Tom Berenger is at the top of his game. I think that he is one of the great western actors of our generation. The cinematography is top notch. This is right along the same caliber as Lonesome Dove. If you are looking for a great western, this is it.

The alternative version to "Heaven's Gate"
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 21, 2011
The Johnson County War in Wyoming has always fascinated me as it was really the last fully lawlessness time in the early years of Wyoming's Staehood or any western state for that matter.
This Hallmark production is in sharp contrast to the overlong but more in depth and historically correct Al Cimino's production 'Heaven's Gate' dealing with the same subject. I would recommend this production to be seen by those people, who want a simplified version of the pitting of rich cattle barons against newly arrived homesteaders, which leads to all out war.
It is a fascinating period of American History and Hallmark's version does justice to the subject with great acting, superb cinematography,a sound music score and good direction by David S. Cass SR. This version as a Hallmark production is made for television and the teleplay by Larry McMurtry and Dianna Ossana(of 'Lonsome Dove' fame)is scintillating.
I am not a fan of Burt Reynolds but his role as the hired gun/corrupt sheriff is played to perfection, while Tom Berenger, Luke Perry and Rachel Ford are outstanding in their roles.
I have rated it above Al Cimino's 'Heavens Gate' only for the reason that you are immediately transported into the basic facts of the storyline, but both productions should be in any collection on this subject.

Schade, das diese TV-Produktion noch keinen deutschen Vertrieb gefunden hat!
Denn was man hier geboten bekommt ist schon Kino-tauglich.Eine brilliante Cast und eine Story, die es durchaus mit Western wie
Open Range oder Lonesome Dove aufnehmen kann!
