Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"[John]'s got a great fastball, a good breaking ball, and he has a good knowledge of pitching. When you're looking at film, if there's a mechanical flaw, he understands. He's not just a thrower. There might be a misconception there as far as his being a thrower and not a pitcher. But he is a pitcher. He knows what he wants to do, and when he executes it consistently, nobody can touch him." - Leo Mazzone in Chop Talk (April 2001)

John Smoltz Hall of Fame Plaque

John Smoltz | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 2015 (HOF)

John Smoltz is the only pitcher in baseball history with at least two-hundred career wins (Top 1,000) and one-hundred fifty career saves (Top 1,000). Some additional numbers of interest:

2 - John Smoltz and Dennis Eckersley are the only two pitchers in baseball history with a 20-win season, and a 50-save season. #Elite

29 - John Smoltz's number 29 was retired by the Atlanta Braves in 2012, the tenth number retired in franchise history, joining Hank Aaron, Bobby Cox, Tom Glavine, Chipper Jones, Greg Maddux, Eddie Mathews, Dale Murphy, Phil Niekro and Warren Spahn.

55 - John Smoltz saved fifty-five games in 2002, breaking the National League (NL) record for saves in a season set originally by Randy Myers, who had 53 saves in 1993, tied by Trevor Hoffman in 1998. [Do you know what NL pitcher tied Smoltzie's record in 2003? Answer]

154 - John Smoltz saved one-hundred fifty-four games when he converted to a closer, the second most in Braves history behind Craig Kimbrel (186).

276 - John Smoltz struck out two-hundred seventy-six batters in 1996, the single season record for strikeouts in a season by an Atlanta Braves pitcher.

3,011 - John Smoltz struck out three-thousand eleven batters while wearing an Atlanta Braves uniform (plus 33 as a Red Sox and 40 as a Cardinal), the most in franchise history for the Braves.

On April 22, 2008, John Smoltz struck out Felipe Lopez and entered the 3,000 Strikeout Club. Smoltzie was the sixteenth pitcher to reach the plateau, the fourteenth right-hander - only five pitchers entered the club in fewer career innings [Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Nolan Ryan and Curt Schilling].
