Michael Edwards has two obvious reasons why he wants to keep Mohamed Salah at Liverpool

There are two reasons why Michael Edwards will be wanting to keep Mohamed Salah at Liverpool this summer.

Despite Mohamed Salah’s poor run of form of late, Liverpool will be looking to keep the Egyptian winger in the club’s ranks next season.

That is according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who claims Liverpool expect Salah to stay at the club next season.

It may be a bit of a surprise given Salah is 32-years-old and has just one year left on his contract. However, it’s a choice that makes complete sense for Liverpool.

For two reasons in particular.

The two reasons why Michael Edwards will want to keep Mohamed Salah

It seems even a little bit bizarre to consider selling Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian is still one of the best players in world football.

Sure, his form may have dipped a little bit since his injury, but prior to that he was at the peak of his powers.

He’s still keeping his body in peak condition, and it makes no sense to get rid of him just yet. Especially if Liverpool can agree a short-term extension of his current deal.

Edwards will want to keep Salah for two reasons as well. The first will be to maintain continuity at Anfield. Liverpool will already be losing Jurgen Klopp this summer. The club won’t want to lose its talisman either.

Having Salah as a key leadership figure in the squad makes sense.

The other major factor is to do with the reality of the market. The simple truth is that there are no right-wingers of Salah’s profile who are ready to make the step-up to Liverpool.

Some names like Johan Bakayoko, Michael Olise or Mohammed Kudus have circulated on social media. They are all top talents. However, none of them are at the level that Salah has been performing at for years.

They still need a couple of years to fulfil that potential.

So where could Liverpool strengthen this summer

Liverpool fans may want offensive reinforcements but it’s far more likely that Edwards will be looking at the defensive department instead.

The priority for Liverpool will be a centre-back. Although a holding midfielder and a left-back should be targeted as well.

Those will be the areas Liverpool will look to invest in first before exploring options for the club’s attack.
