Joey Kern is returning to the Midwest to finish his collegiate career.

Hailing from Norwalk, Iowa, Kern was a standout guard at Johns Hopkins for three years as well after an exceptional career at Dowling Catholic High School. He's ready to finish his final year of basketball wearing the Maroon and Gold.

"Joey Kern is a high IQ, very skilled, driven player," head coach Ben Johnson said. "Joey loves to compete and has a knack for making winning plays. He will be a great addition to our program this year."

A 6-1 senior graduate transfer, Kern made his mark in the Johns Hopkins record books and started in 81 of 84 games. In just three years, Kern ranked 11th in JHU history in three-point percentage (.396), seventh in three-pointers (167), sixth in three-point attempts (422), 16th in steals (100) and 15th in minutes played (2,440). Although the Blue Jays did not play basketball in 2020-21 due to COVID-19, Kern started in all 28 games in 2019-20 where averaged 29.1 minutes, 8.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.5 steals. In 2018-19, Kern started in 26 of 27 games for 9.9 ppg and 3.7 rpg. As a rookie in 2017-18, Kern averaged 27.2 minutes played and started in 27 of 29 games and was 46.4 percent from the field, including 41.6 percent from three-point range.

During his time with Dowling Catholic, Kern led the team to 36-10 record and back-to-back conference titles his junior and senior years. In his final high school season, Kern averaged 10.6 points, 2.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 4.0 rebounds per game. He garnered two all-conference honors and first-team all-sub state his junior and senior seasons. Kern finished his high school career as Dowling's all-time leader in career steals and three-point field goals. He was also named an Academic All-State selection his senior year and National Merit Commended Scholar athlete.

Kern earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins last month.
