Dem Meltdown Incoming: Joe Manchin Announces Decision on Voting Bill

Prepare for more Democratic meltdown.

Joe Biden attacked Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) and lied his head off, claiming they voted with Republicans often. That was untrue, they’ve voted with Biden 100% of the time so far.

We reported how Sinema’s response was to crush Biden’s dream of killing the filibuster, delivering a sterling defense of why it was important and should not be eliminated.

Now Joe Manchin is responding decisively and Democrats trying to grab power are definitely going to gnash their teeth over this one.

Manchin wrote an op-ed in the Gazette-Mail making it clear that he would not be voting for the Democrats’ voting grab, known as the “For the People Act.” He also reiterated that he would not kill the filibuster.

Manchin chastised the Democrats, noting how the filibuster had protected Democrat rights and how Democrats had defended it in the past.

With that in mind, some Democrats have again proposed eliminating the Senate filibuster rule in order to pass the For the People Act with only Democratic support. They’ve attempted to demonize the filibuster and conveniently ignore how it has been critical to protecting the rights of Democrats in the past….Then, it was Senate Democrats who were proudly defending the filibuster. Thirty-three Senate Democrats penned a letter to Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. and Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., warning of the perils of eliminating the filibuster.

Manchin ripped the Democrat power grab.

It has been said by much wiser people than me that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Well, what I’ve seen during my time in Washington is that every party in power will always want to exercise absolute power, absolutely. Our founders were wise to see the temptation of absolute power and built in specific checks and balances to force compromise that serves to preserve our fragile democracy. The Senate, its processes and rules, have evolved over time to make absolute power difficult while still delivering solutions to the issues facing our country and I believe that’s the Senate’s best quality.

He said the fundamental right to vote was being “overtly politicized,” “Whether it is state laws that seek to needlessly restrict voting or politicians who ignore the need to secure our elections, partisan policymaking won’t instill confidence in our democracy — it will destroy it.” Notice the nod to the effort to secure elections as a legitimate effort.

Manchin indicated that while he was for the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, he was not for the For the People Act that would essentially nationalize elections.

I believe that partisan voting legislation will destroy the already weakening binds of our democracy, and for that reason, I will vote against the For the People Act. Furthermore, I will not vote to weaken or eliminate the filibuster. For as long as I have the privilege of being your U.S. senator, I will fight to represent the people of West Virginia, to seek bipartisan compromise no matter how difficult and to develop the political bonds that end divisions and help unite the country we love.

That’s going to give Biden a fit because that’s as decisive as Sinema’s announcement. If anything, Biden’s attack seems to have only solidified their opposition.

Not only that, it may get even worse for the Democrats who want to play games with the rules and try to shove everything through by reconciliation. As we reported, the decision by the Senate parliamentarian has stopped the Democratic thought that they could do this.

But in case there was any doubt, Manchin said earlier in the week he would not be in favor of passing infrastructure by reconciliation.

In case that wasn’t enough to make liberals hyperventilate, he even seems to put the kibosh on anything passing through the reconciliation route in the future.
