President Joe Biden's approval rating among young Americans has seen a major decline over the past month, as the nation braces for the midterm elections, a new poll has found.
A Quinnipiac University poll published on Wednesday found that approval of Biden among Americans aged 18 to 34 has declined to just 27 percent. The new findings represent a fall of six percent in less than a month.
In Quinnipiac's previous poll, published on April 27, 33 percent of that age group approved of how the president was handling his job.
Sixty-one percent of those aged 18 to 34 said they disapproved of Biden in May's poll, while 12 percent didn't know or didn't provide an answer.
There has been an even larger decline among Hispanics, with just 26 percent approving of the job Biden's doing. A further 60 percent disapproved and 13 percent didn't know or provided no answer.
The figures represent a sharp fall since April, when 44 percent of Hispanics approved of the president and 41 percent disapproved, while 15 percent didn't know or did not provide an answer.
There was more bad news for Biden among those aged 34-49, where his approval now stands at just 32 percent, while in April's survey 34 percent of that age group approved of his job performance.
Biden's disapproval among this age group is now at 62 percent.
The new poll was conducted from May 12 to 16 among 1,586 U.S. adults and had a margin of error of 2.5 percent.
Biden's overall approval rating in the Quinnipiac poll stood at 35 percent compared to 57 percent of respondents who disapproved. That compares to a divide of 38 percent approval to 52 percent disapproval in April's poll.
The president's rating has remained steady among other age groups, with 38 percent of those aged 50 to 64 approving of the job he's doing, unchanged since April's poll.
It was a similar picture with the over-65s group, as 45 percent approved of the president. That's a decline of one point since April.
Biden's approval among white and Black people was largely unchanged compared to April's survey. He enjoyed 32 percent job approval among white Americans (unchanged since last month) and 63 percent approval among Black Americans, a decline of just one point.
Both young people and Hispanics could prove crucial in the upcoming midterm elections as Republicans are seeking to take back both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Democrats appear to be facing an uphill struggle to retain control of Congress. Poll tracker FiveThirtyEight's generic congressional ballot showed that the GOP enjoyed 45 percent support in the upcoming elections as of Thursday, compared to 42.7 percent for the Democrats.
If Republicans can take control of just one chamber of Congress, they will be able to stymie Biden's agenda for the two years leading up to the 2024 presidential election.
