Patriot League Baseball Players of the Week Announced (4.16.24)

Holy Cross takes two weekly baseball honors; Army West Point earns one

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Holy Cross claimed two of the three Patriot League baseball weekly awards when the League office announced honors on Tuesday. Army West Point received the third accolade.
 
Army West Point senior catcher Derek Berg collected Patriot League Baseball Player of the Week after batting .400 (6-for-15) with two home runs, six RBIs and six runs during the Black Knights’ 3-1 week.
 
Holy Cross senior right-handed pitcher Alex Bryant collected Patriot League Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time after allowing just one run on four hits in a 7.0-inning complete-game win against Navy.
 
Crusaders’ freshman second baseman Alex Sandell picked up his initial Patriot League Rookie of the Week after batting .412 (7-for-17) with one HR and seven RBIs to help Holy Cross go 3-2 last week.
 
Bucknell junior RHP Tyler O’Neill and sophomore DH Michael Trommer, Holy Cross junior SS Jimmy King, Lehigh junior RHP Marcus Danchision and Navy junior RHP Landon Kruer all earned honorable mentions for their performances last week.

PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Derek Berg, Army West Point, Sr., C, Conroe, Texas/Conroe
*Berg batted .400 (6-for-15) while slugging .933 and reaching base at a .500 clip to help Army West Point go 3-1 last week, including taking two of three games from Lafayette.
*The senior catcher hit two home runs and two doubles while scoring six times and driving in six runs. He hit two HRs and drove in five runs while scoring six times in three games against Lafayette.
*He went 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs in a 17-5 win in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Leopards.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Alex Bryant, Holy Cross, Sr., RHP, Tampa, Fla./Jesuit
*Bryant earned a 7-1 victory over Navy by tossing a 7.0-inning complete game, allowing one run on four hits while matching his season-high with nine strikeouts.
*He held the Navy lineup to a .167 batting average while allowing four hits and two walks in the win.
*The senior righty held the Mids scoreless through 6.2 innings before a two-out RBI double broke the shutout.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Alex Sandell, Holy Cross, Fr., 2B, Cambridge, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols
*Sandell batted .412 (7-for-17) while slugging .941 with one home run, two doubles, two triples, seven RBIs and four runs scored in five starts at second base last week.
*The Cambridge, Mass. native posted three multi-hit games, including a 2-for-3 performance with one double, one triple, two RBIs and three runs scored in a 15-5 victory over Navy in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
*On Tuesday, he went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run and two walks in a 10-9 win over Stonehill.
 
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Tyler O’Neill, Bucknell, Jr., RHP, Baltimore, Md./Mepham
*O’Neill tossed a 7.0-inning complete game, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out seven to earn a 2-1 win against Lehigh in game one of Bucknell’s doubleheader against Lehigh on Saturday. The junior right-hander has thrown at least 6.0 innings, allowing three runs or fewer in his last five starts.  
 
Michael Trommer, Bucknell, So., DH, Trevose, Pa./Archbishop Wood
*Trommer batted .438 (7-for-16) while slugging .625 in four games, helping the Bison take two of three games against Lehigh. He went 4-for-5 with three doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored in an 18-8 victory over the Mountain Hawks on Sunday.
 
Jimmy King, Holy Cross, Jr., SS, Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep
*King batted .462 (6-for-13) while slugging .769 and reaching base at a .571 clip to help the Crusaders go 3-2 last week, including taking two of three games from Navy. He scored eight runs and drove in four with one double and one home run.
 
Marcus Danchision, Lehigh, Jr., RHP, Ringtown, Pa./MMI Prep
*Danchision earned a win after allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out four through 7.0 innings of Lehigh’s 3-1 win over Bucknell. The Ringtown, Pa. native held the Bison to a .125 batting average.
 
Landon Kruer, Navy, Jr., RHP, Sellersburg, Ind./Our Lady of Providence
*Kruer earned a four-inning save in a scoreless appearance, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out four in the Mids’ 7-2 victory over Holy Cross on Sunday. The junior right-hander logged his fifth appearance of three or more innings while earning his sixth save in his last seven outings.
