Sources: Wolves set to extend Nelson Semedo’s deal
Wolves are likely to activate the two-year extension clause in the contract of star defender Nelson Semedo, sources have told Football Insider.
The 29-year-old’s deal is currently set to expire in June but it is believed the Midlands club are keen to safeguard his transfer value.
Semedo only penned an initial three-year contract when he joined Wolves from Barcelona for a reported fee of close to £30million in 2020.
He earns a reported wage of £80,000-a-week at Molineux – an outlay the club are unlikely to be able to afford if they suffer relegation to the Championship this season.
Despite sitting 13th in the Premier League, Wolves have a lead of just four points over 18th-place West Ham – and have one of the worst goal difference figures of any top-flight side.
Sources told this site on Monday (20 March) that Wolves fear they could be forced into a fire sale if they are relegated.
Midfield has been identified as a major area of concern, with Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes attracting interest and Joao Moutinho out of contract.
Portugal international Semedo has made 30 appearances as a regular starter across all competitions this season, registering two assists.
The 24-cap star has racked up 93 games in all competitions since joining from Barcelona three years ago.
He was part of the Portugal squad which won the Nations League in 2019 and has helped Benfica and Barcelona to two league title wins.
Wolves are next in action against relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest on 1 April.
