Jesus Of Cool was released in the U.K. in March 1978 and peaked at # 22 in Music Week a month later. Its American counterpart, Pure Pop For Now People, was released in the U.S.A. also in March 1978 and peaked at # 127 on the Billboard Album Chart the following month.
The are at least four versions of the artwork with the six photographs on the front sleeve being different:
- The UK version with one picture of Dave Edmunds (which shares the same sleeve with most of the other versions): Jesus Of Cool
- The North American version (which also has a different rear sleeve and title): Pure Pop For Now People (US) and Pure Pop For Now People (Canada)
- The Scandinavian version (which differs significantly from most of the other versions; all but one of the six photographs on the front sleeve are different, they are all of Nick Lowe (no pics of Dave Edmunds), and the reflection on the rear sleeve is green while in most of the other versions it is white): Jesus Of Cool (Scandinavia), The Jesus Of Cool (Finland), Jesus Of Cool (Norway). The Scandinavian, Finnish and Norwegian versions also have an extra track "Cruel To Be Kind", which was not included on the original UK version.
- Reissue on Demon Records Jesus Of Cool which has a set of six pictures of Nick Lowe not used in any of the other versions, with the reflection on the rear cover being red. There are single sleeve and gatefold versions of this one.

- Nick Lowe's solo debut is a triumph of wit and sarcasm, a dozen tunes (on the US release) with a hundred hooks and nearly as many clever lyrical lines. Highlights include the reggae influenced "No Reason" and "(I Love The Sound Of) Breaking Glass", "Marie Provost", "Little Hitler", "Nutted By Reality" and "36 Inches High". No issues with this pressing, it's got a crisp, punchy mix with adequate low end and a soundstage that feels equal parts rootsy and glossy. My copy is in excellent condition, playing clean and quiet with no noticeable surface noise.
- Great lp- great songs played and captured very well. The bass is big- not overwhelming, but bigger than average period lp’s. Nice member of the collection
- What a rich period this was for progressive pop music, unashamed to be aiming for the charts (though rarely as successfully as the music deserves) but also incredibly clever. Also superb cover
- Very nice mastering. Some serious bass on this cut but not at the expense of the vocals or high end. Just too bad the pressing is a bit noisy in between tracks and in quiet parts, even after some cleanings. But doesn't distract when the music is chugging along. Could have been 5 stars though...
- Pretty noisy reissue - lots of surface noise between tracks and disappointingly during the quiet passages. Looks great but I want to listen to it, not watch it go round.
- Named after one of the fake titles given by Lowe to the press for his debut album, Wireless World combines all the tracks from the UK & US versions (Jesus Of Cool and Pop For The People) on one disc.
Which means, with all those extra tracks, Wireless World isn’t the hottest cut in the world, but it’s not K-Tel disc quiet either.
The “Dust-Bin Lid” green is much darker than the promotional photos. The cover uses the US notepad inner with new copyright information on the flip. The back cover is a shot not used on either previous edition: a photo of dust-bin with a guitar (ok?).
Pressing quality - my copy had a few air-bubble indents that didn’t cause skipping or loud pops. There was some sticky glue type gunk on the disc that cleaned off with a typical record cleaning spray. The noise floor of the record is good, but it’s a dirty record that will need a few cleans to minimise the snap, crackle and pops.
Mastering quality - the sound is punchy. I don’t have an original to compare it too, but the sound has enough attack in the guitars and drums with some decent low end. In fact, the mastering is quite good.
Overall - not a bad pressing if you can get a clean copy. It’s a shame that RSD and rushed quality control go hand in hand as the mastering sounds good. - Wow. For a label that constantly bills itself as being by music fans for musics, Yep Roc really doesn't get vinyl at all -- missing inserts/lyric sheets, truncated artwork, omitted credits, and so on. Just consistently disappointing. In this case, we have a release that is entirely redundant. All of these tracks -- and more -- are available on their 2LP "Jesus of Cool" reissue from a few years back (YR2620). Funny thing -- that reissue, despite the great track listing, is incredibly maddening because it doesn't have the liner notes from the CD version, personnel credits...heck, it doesn't even have songwriting credits!
I'm done with Yep Roc vinyl...except as cut-outs... - I listened to my UK original pressing just now (a VG+ copy that’s well played - it’s variant 1 by the looks) for the first time in a while and was struck by how good it sounds. I thought it might be a George “Porky” Peckham special but it doesn’t have his marking though the comment is very “him”. Anyone share my view re the quality of the sound?
