The former Tottenham Hotspur and England forward was talking about the best moments of his career, and moves on to his time at Ibrox.
Defoe recalls the conversation he had with Gerrard and how he knew before the season had even started that Rangers would win the league: “I remember meeting Stevie, and he basically said to me, ‘This is the nearest thing I’ve seen to Liverpool’.
“I said ‘Really?’, he said ‘It is a giant club’, sleeping giant at the time, ‘And I want to get it back to where it should be’.
“Straight away you think, ‘I need to win.’, you know I don’t ever want to leave here without winning anything.
“And I knew from the first week in pre-season that we were going to win the league.
“I said to the manager, I noticed a different sort of focus with the players, the gym was packed. To the point where you needed a membership, the gym was packed with players.”

It was a historic season for Rangers when Defoe joined, as they won their first league title since 2011 and stopped arch rivals Celtic from winning a historic ten titles on the bounce.
They also went unbeaten all season, a fantastic achievement from Gerrard.
Defoe could also take some credit, not just for the goals he scored that season, but also in his role as a player-coach that year.
Both former England internationals have now moved on from their time at Rangers, with Gerrard now having to make tough decisions at Aston Villa, and Defoe an academy coach back at Tottenham.
It’s certainly a memory Rangers fans will be happy to reminisce about, although their focus will move pretty swiftly back to trying to qualify for the Champions League in their winner-takes-all tie against PSV Eindhoven next week.
Gerrard’s successor Gio van Bronckhorst has just been praising one of the players who put in a ‘smart’ display in the first leg.
