Most underrated drummer of Steven Wilson

Tomer Z He’s never mentioned when discussing drummers that worked with SW. However, he’s a great drummer and his work on Blackfield Live-album is so good and matches the songs beautifully.

Do you agree?

Cant argue he's a very solid drummer. But when you've worked with Gavin, Marco, Wackerman, Maitland and Blundell it's definitely no an insult to be overlooked haha.

Pat Mastelotto in the list

He deserves his chops like any other talented musician but tbh I get why he isn’t discussed nearly as much as a guy like Marco Minneman whose drumming on The Raven was mindblowing

Yeah I know that the main discussion is Gavin vs Marco, but I think Tomer is in the same league as Craig and Chris.

Ps. My vote is for Gavin. Marco is a great drummer, but his style is too much for me

When it came to the To The Bone tour, the live record, I was not a fan of Blundells drumming for that performance. Clearly he’s a good drummer, but I felt his playing took away from the songs. He way overplayed. I would’ve liked to have seen a more simple rock oriented drummer for that tour. I know blundell played on the to the bone record. His playing on the record was much more simple than the live takes.

Jeremy Stacey drummed on a more of To The Bone than Craig did. When I saw SW on that tour I was disappointed that Craig simplified some drum parts, especially ones from earlier albums. I like Craig’s drumming but SW needs much more flexible drummers backing him, IMO. A “regular rock” drummer would be even more of a let down. Michael Spearman’s much more basic drumming on The Future Bites is a good example of how important drummers are - I found his contributions to be far too basic and bland, just one of my many problems with that album.

Yeah. I knew Jeremy Stacy did a lot as well. I don’t know. The drumming on that live record just didn’t sit well with me. That’s just me though. It was also hard for me to get into Min means drumming on the Get all you deserve live record. The way he played the older material felt overplayed also. It eventually grew on me. Especially once the Raven came out and I got used to hearing his type on things. When I saw that tour, it was Chad Wackerman playing drums. Disappointed I didn’t get to see Marco that night. A lot of those thoughts come from My own drumming as well. I’m not great by any means. I consider myself a song player. I can do fancy shit within the context of a song , but ask me to do a solo, and it’ll be very underwhelming. I like to hear drummers play what the songs need.

I wouldn’t be disappointed it wasn’t Marco if Chad Wackerman was playing. Wackerman is brilliant

He was fantastic. Without a doubt. I just had My heart set on Marco.

very much agree with that take with steven at the albert hall as well, craig overplayed the snot out of that set. there's a few bits in regret #9 that really take a moment for the band to lock back into after he calms down again.

for sure blundell is a very gifted drummer, but he's a bit excitable.

Tommer Z is a great drummer. I also learned his brother is also a very prolific session drummer. Particularly in Country Music of all things

His brother Nir Z is indeed a very very good session drummer and played with Genesis on the Calling All Stations album (the last studio album after Phil Collins left) and played with them on the following tour. I saw him then and he was mind blowing good.

Gosh I haven’t heard that name in so long. I used to chat on MSN messenger with him! Is he still active?

I listened to the Blackfield Live album when out for a walk the other day and came to think of him. His drumming on Christenings are really good.

He’s still active with Blackfield, but I don’t know any other work he has done. I’m guessing he plays with Aviv as well?

The drummer on the studio version of Christenings is actually Gavin Harrison. The song was originally conceived as a Porcupine Tree track for the Deadwing album, and it also features Richard Barbieri.

Yes and that song was absolutely not Deadwing-material. But Tomer plays it great live, specially the drum fill at 2.40 is so tasteful and nice

Sorry for some reason I thought you were talking about the studio version, apparently I can't read.

And I agree by the way, it was definitely not a good fit for the Deadwing album.

Pat M.

I think Interpol's Sam Foragino did a great job on Staircase. He seems a good match with SW's sensibilities (not going ridiculously over-the-top like Minnemann for example).

I agree with this - I saw him live with Blackfield back in 2011 and was blown away by his drumming in particular. No frills necessarily, but rock solid.
