Top-of-the-table clash in Freiburg

Second-placed Eintracht travel to fourth-placed Freiburg on Wednesday evening, with the two sides level on points.

After beating FC Schalke 04 3-0 at home on Saturday, the Eagles return to action against Freiburg at the Europa-Park Stadion on Wednesday evening. Eintracht’s final game of the first half of the Bundesliga campaign gets under way at 20:30 CET.

Eintracht and Freiburg are currently level on 30 points - five behind league leaders Bayern Munich. Eagles head coach Oliver Glasner is refusing to get carried away with his team’s position in the table, however, choosing instead to focus on their upcoming game. “If we play to our limits, we have a good chance of winning games,” he said. “I want to see the type of football that brought us success last year.”

Freiburg strong at home

In Freiburg, Eintracht are facing a side who have been particularly impressive at the back this season. Prior to Saturday’s 6-0 defeat at VfL Wolfsburg, the Black Forest outfit had conceded just 17 goals in the league - the second fewest in the division. Up front, Michael Gregoritsch has proven a reliable attacking threat with six goals and three assists in the Bundesliga in 2022/23.

Freiburg have turned the Europa-Park Stadion into something of a fortress this season, losing only once on home soil - a 3-1 defeat by Borussia Dortmund back in August - and collecting 16 points from seven games in front of their own fans. In the Europa League, Christian Streich’s team won two and drew one of their three home group games.

On the personnel front, Eintracht are set to be without Éric Junior Dina Ebimbe for the time being after the two-time Rookie of the Month winner suffered a high ankle sprain in the victory over Schalke. Tuta, however, has returned to full training and could be included in the travelling squad.
