Jennifer Aniston to Produce 9 to 5 Reimagining with a Script from Juno Writer Diablo Cody

Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda previously toyed with producing a sequel to 1980's '9 to 5' before dropping the idea in 2019

Jennifer Aniston is taking a new spin on a classic '80s movie.

Aniston, 55, is set to produce a reimagining of 9 to 5, the 1980 comedy that starred Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Aniston is attached to produce the film through her production company Echo Films, which she runs with producer Kristen Hahn.

While no plot details are available yet for the in-development project, Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody is writing the movie's script. Cody is best known for winning an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay at the 2008 awards ceremony for writing 2007's Juno. She has also written movies like Jennifer's Body (2009); her most recent film, Lisa Frankenstein, released in February.

9 to 5 followed Parton, Fonda and Tomlin as three women who take revenge on their sexist boss (Dabney Coleman) at a corporate office. The movie made $103 million upon its release and was the second highest-grossing movie of 1980 at the domestic box office, landing only behind the Star Wars movie The Empire Strikes Back.

9 to 5 received one Academy Award nomination at the 1981 Oscars for Parton's title track from the movie.

The comedy's success inspired a sitcom with the same title that ran on ABC from 1982 to 1983 and in syndication into 1988 — and starred Parton's younger sister Rachel Dennison in Parton's lead role. Additionally, a 9 to 5 musical adaptation, with music and lyrics written by Parton, ran on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre for 148 performances between April and September 2009, per Playbill. The production received four nominations at that year's Tony Awards.

Back in 2018, Fonda shared that she, Tomlin and Parton intended to make a sequel to 9 to 5, but Parton explained to Entertainment Tonight in 2019 that they scrapped the idea after further consideration.

"I don't think we're going to do the sequel," she said at the time. "We never could get the script where it was enough different than the first one, and that one turned out so good."

Aniston's reimagining of 9 to 5 does not yet have a release date; no casting news has yet been announced. The actress last appeared on the big screen in 2023's Murder Mystery 2, as well as in the most recent season of her Apple TV+ series The Morning Show, both of which she produced through Echo Films as well.
