This place is awesome. My favorite item on the menu is the Pot Roast Poutine. I also love the Cheese Curds, Mozzarella Sticks, and Mac n’ Cheese Bites. The Fly Fishing Fudge Ice Cream is amazing too.

A local icon, Janine's Frostee offers a plethora of the fried food you might expect from a roadside takeout, but they also offer a variety of salads and sandwiches too. The outdoor tables were clean and the service was super friendly.
We stopped here quite by accident while driving from Amherst (son is a senior) home--We took Route 9 to avoid the boring Turnpike. It was a lovely drive--passing by Quabbin Reservoir where the views are spectacular. We happened upon Janine's Frostee and decided to stop...for ice cream as we had already eaten in Amherst at Pasta E Basta. There are umpteen flavors in both regualr ice cream and soft serve. This is a stand in line place to order and pick up in another line, but while waiting we spoke to folks who frequent this establisment, which has been here since the mid 50s. There are picnic tables to eat at and ample parking in a lot and on the street. Everyone raved about the food...nothing fancy, but great burgers, clams, fries, onion rings, hot dogs, etc. It reminded me of places when I was growing up. It was a delight to stop here and the ice cream was wonderful...my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter thought it was "awesome". If you are out for a ride on the weekend, this is the place to stop...friendly service, short wait, and great ice cream and food! Oh, I didn't use the restrooms, but my daughter-in-law did and also my husband...they each reported that the facilities were spotless--quite amazing for a roadside place!More
Awful place. Awful management. Boss so weird and creepy!!!!!!! Seriously uncomfortable being there. Needs big change to survive
We ordered a whole belly clams plate and a scallop plate, with 2 fountain drinks. The total came to $55.56 and we each ate 2 bites and were disappointed that the clams were tough and over cooked, the scallops tasted as if they had been altered...to preserve them, Ammonia like smell, and tasteless. We ended up throwing our meals in the trash! We will not return.More
$14.25 No lettuce and about 5 dry celery pieces. No mayo, no butter on roll. Lobster meat had that fish tank ammonia smell. Sorry to say but so disappointing. It was the worse lobster roll I'd ever eaten in my life. Sorry, don't bother, something...not right going on there this year 7-4-2018. Go for ice cream or a hot dog.More
The ice cream is good, but my son said he had the worst burger in his life there. It could have been his misfortune, but he will not get a meal there again.
Overpriced run of the mill right off the Sysco truck food. Nothing special prices are getting higher and higher every year. Don't understand the attraction. Skimpy portions and overpriced.
they have the most expensive grinders in town and the grinders aren't even the average size. the food is so-so, the prices pretty high and the ice cream can be gotten anywhere
Janine's has grown from a little roadside stand to an outstanding stop or destination for an ice cream or a whole meal. The food is always great and service is friendly. Their fresh seafood (esp fried shrimp) is fantastic! East in your car or under...canopied picnic tables.More
I wrote a review of this place about 1 year ago giving it a 4. This year it seems different or I'm just getting to be an old crank. The portions on banana splits are quite small compared to other places charging in the $6-$7...range. The other day I ordered two small sides-one shrimp and one fried scallops. There were about 4 or 5 med. shrimp for $6. There were not more than maybe 6 med. scallops for $9. I think those portions are skimpy. I'll go back to this place but be careful what I order. The food is good but the value is getting to be questionable.More
Janine's first opened in 1956. At that time, Janine's occupied a prominent location right on Route 9. The years have brought changes and Route 9 has been straightened, so that Janine's Frostee now lies almost out of sight from the highway. The locals know it's...there, though, and there is usually a line for both food and ice cream on a summer evening. The drive-in restaurant is popular for its burgers, fries, hot dogs, and fried seafood. I'm not a big fan of their onion rings, though. I go to Howard's in West Brookfield for those. The hard ice cream they serve is very good. It's Giffords and they carry 25 flavors. Janine's is open seasonally from late spring through October. Their website will give you the best information.More
I love this place....and I love peanut butter. It makes a great Peanut butter shake. We have only gone for ice cream, so can't comment on the food.
We stopped at Janine's for ice cream after having tried their ice cream several weeks ago at the Bigger Dipper charity event in Worcester. We were so impressed with their ice cream then and the fact that they were donating it for a charity event...that we decided that if we were ever in Ware that we would stop at their restaurant. We found their restaurant in Ware to be excellent. The place is welcoming, clean and spotless. The staff is friendly and happy. And their ice cream is the best. We will return!More
Not everything is always perfect but some other things great so can't give less than 5 stars! This a composite of more than one visit. I most recently visited today 3/31. The haddock dinner is good B+ or A- I’d say, the fries almost always...shine did so again. The chowder had a little grit in it but very good otherwise, A- if not for the grit maybe B+ considering that. I don’t know how common or expected that should be. For all I know, some preparers of clam chowder never have grit in their chowder, or maybe it is a relatively common thing. I have had chowder without grit here and elsewhere, but encounter grit more often than not. The ice cream I can’t have too much of, so I order hard serve in the little sampler cones. The wild blueberry is great, I think the chocolate is twice as good really awesome! The staff is truly special, at least it was last year and I see signs that this will continue. A few new faces one familiar then today 2 more familiar faces, haven’t seen that first one in a while. I was called by my first name today by one of them who also greeted me with a smile. This is what I referred to before as being treated like a Hollywood actor or rock star. It is for lonely me anyway, it may just be nice friendly service to some, but makes me feel not unwanted mb even a valued customer a part of the whole experience and whatever all that entails. I wish some things stay the same, I wish some things change. I can let it all get me ecstatic or melancholy but that’s just me, it is what it is always ends up a good experience, very good ice cream food close behind. I almost always feel welcomed here and will return!More
