Sam Puckett is gone but not forgotten in the world of iCarly. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Miranda Cosgrove opened up about Jennette McCurdy‘s absence from the upcoming Paramount+ revival. When asked if Sam’s departure would be addressed, Cosgrove confirmed the series will provide an explanation right away.

“Definitely, we touch a lot on the whole relationship with Sam and where Sam’s at in the pilot episode,” Cosgrove said. “And then we mention her a little bit throughout the season, so we’ll definitely explain that on the show.”

In a separate interview with Comicbook.com, Cosgrove, who helms iCarly as web vlogger Carly Shay, explained that “in real life, we all really wanted Jennette to be part of the show, but she’s just doing other things right now.”

iCarly ran for six seasons on Nickelodeon, debuting in 2007 and running until 2012. The Paramount+ revival series was announced in December, 2020, tapping Cosgrove, Jerry Trainor, and Nathan Kress to reprise their main roles. At the time of the announcement, it was unclear if fellow leads McCurdy and Noah Muck (Gibby) would also return for the show — but McCurdy later revealed she had ended her acting career.

“I quit a few years ago because I initially didn’t want to do it,” McCurdy said on her Empty Inside podcast. “My mom put me in it when I was 6 and by sort of age, I guess, 10 or 11, I was the main financial support for my family.”

McCurdy, who continued to portray her iCarly character on Sam & Cat, went on to explain that her past acting roles had left her feeling “embarrassed” and “unfulfilled.”

“I resent my career in a lot of ways,” McCurdy said. “I feel so unfulfilled by the roles that I played and felt like it was the most cheesy, embarrassing [thing]. I did the shows that I was on from like, 13 to 21, and by 15, I was already embarrassed.”

Paramount+’s iCarly revival is set to debut on the streamer on June 17, and will follow Carly as she navigates an influencer lifestyle alongside her brother, longtime best friends, and newer companions. Watch the trailer by scrolling up to the top of the page.
