EXCLUSIVE: “At the heart of our republic,” Rep. Liz Cheney noted earlier this week, “is the guarantee of the peaceful transfer of power.”

The illusion that such a principle would always be observed was violently shattered on January 6, 2021. Today, discovery+ unveiled a trailer for its upcoming documentary January 6th, which will take viewers inside that momentous day when supporters of Pres. Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol in what many observers have called an attempted coup d’état.

The documentary directed by Gédéon and Jules Naudet aims to tell “the definitive story of the siege of the Capitol” by combining footage of the insurrection and interviews with many who saw it unfold before their eyes, including Representatives Cheney, Susan Wild, Adam Kinzinger and Jamie Raskin, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, law enforcement officers who came under attack that day and others. The film will premiere on the discovery+ streaming platform on Thursday, January 5, 2023, the eve of the second anniversary of the insurrection.

January 6th is the complete story of the attack on the Capitol told by those who witnessed the chaos first-hand. From the beginning, we knew we wanted to tell the story of this unprecedented moment in history as a human event and without political bias,” Gédéon and Jules Naudet said. “We believe that in moments where the worst of humanity is on display, there will always be heroes who step up as shining examples of courage and selflessness in the face of tragedy. Our hope is that people come away from this film with a deep appreciation for the countless acts of bravery on display that day, both big and small.”

In an interview seen in the trailer, Speaker Pelosi recalls how “security pulled me right from the podium” of the House floor as rioters bore down on the chamber. Rep. Kinzinger (a member of the House select committee investigating the January 6th attack, along with Reps. Cheney and Raskin), reveals he had a weapon at the ready when insurrectionists broke into the seat of American government.

“I have my gun out on my desk to defend myself,” Rep. Kinzinger recounts in the trailer.

“As we approach the two-year anniversary of the January 6th attack on the capitol, it feels more important than ever to share the definitive account of what took place that day from the people who were actually there,” noted Igal Svet, VP, Documentaries, at discovery+. “True to the spirit of their past work in films like 9/11 and November 13: Attack on Paris, Gédéon and Jules Naudet have taken an event that changed the course of history and turned the focus to the many acts of bravery and compassion amidst the chaos.”

Svet added, “I am incredibly proud of this documentary, which captures the immense sacrifice of the first responders on that fateful day. January 6th is an absolute must-see for anyone interested in experiencing the full account of the most shocking day in recent American history.”

For production company Propagate, executive producers are Ben Silverman and Howard T. Owens. For discovery+, executive producers are Igal Svet and Howard Swartz.
