In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This is my favorite song ever. It might sound like a simple surf tune on the surface, but when you consider everything going on musically in terms of chord structure, instrument arrangement, and backing and lead vocals (I bet most of you didn't know that the vocal lead is actually "doubled" - two people singing simultaneously - by the song's two principal writers. This happens in the verses, but not the choruses), it's really pretty complex.
If you are impressed by the complexity of the arrangement, thank Brian Wilson, not Jan and Dean. Brian Wilson co-wrote this song, and others for Jan and Dean, and he provided the arrangement, harmony, and general music sophistication. I like this song, and I like Jan and Dean in general, but they benefited a lot from Brian Wilson's help.

This song epitomizes the surf culture of the 60's. Surf city is a fictitious place (sorry guys) although some places did receive the nickname. For example, Huntington Beach and Santa Cruz, CA - also a borough of ocean county NJ. If you mistook this for a Beach Boys song, you weren't far off. Brian Wilson co-wrote and sang. "woodie" was the nickname for a wood paneled station wagon but there's a double meaning there too wink. A "cherry" was a mint, (virginal) unused car. This too has a double meaning. The girls in surf city have probably been around the block, but he doesn't care because "it gets him to where he wants to go". Never roll the streets up means no nighttime curfew. Shooting the curl means riding deep in a wave with the water over your head.
