Milner: “We Just Wanted The Win”

The vice-captain started his first league game of the season, and what a game it was.

It’s always nice to come back to a challenging game after a ridiculous international break and then get a very anti-climactic, very comprehensive win. This weekend’s game against Leicester City was always going to be a tense one, and the fact that half the team was injured before the kick-off whistle even blew surely didn’t help. Somehow, Klopp made is magic work again and we had an incredibly fun 3-0 win at Anfield to ease the tension with. Vice-captain, James Milner, definitely thought so, too.

“I think first half we were very good, second half wasn’t as good, we let them into the game a bit more,” he told the club website after the match ended. “There’s a lot of miles in the boys’ legs, internationals and things like that. I thought we kept the ball pretty well, at times took the sting out of it when we needed to in the first half. Got the second goal, could have been out of sight more. Bobby, I don’t know what he’s been doing but he was the unluckiest man alive for the first 80 minutes of the game. But he deserved his goal, he was brilliant tonight [and] so unlucky. I think it was a great performance.”

Bobby’s goal came from a Milner assist (who transitioned from right back to midfield halfway through the game because he’s just that incredible) and he was justifiably pleased about both that and his performance.

“Yeah, I’ll take [the assist!]” he added. “But we just wanted the win. It’s nice for me to start the game, I want to start as many games as I can. I know that’s probably not going to be every game these days with me getting slightly older but wherever I’m asked, I’ll do the job I can. Always delighted just to contribute and it’s important we got that win. There’s a long break now between the next international break; it’s hard to get that rhythm early in the season when you’ve got all the international breaks. So it was important to play a very tough team and get a win to set us on a run hopefully now going into this busy period.”
