Swamp Thing (2019)

How many here have seen or even knew about this series? Based on the DC comic character.

It's on Tubi under the horror category, and I've always skipped past it due to really being iffy on the superhero/comic genre, but eventually I watched the first episode and realized James Wan was a producer and Derek Mears plays the title character. I was very surprised by how hard it leans into the horror elements and gore, and the practical costume is great. Absolute shame it only got one season because I found myself binging it as quick as I could.

Also has a great cast (Virginia madsen, Kevin Durand, Maria sten, will Patton, Ian ziering)

While occasionally you do get a "generic CW drama" feel, if you haven't checked it out I definitely recommend.

Absolutely loved this show and was so pissed off we didn't get a Season Two?!

I remember watching this show years ago and was really enjoying it. Good writing and production values, lots of well known actors and behind-the-camera talent were making a high quality product. Then, something went wrong with the production and it had to be quickly shut down. There was lots of speculation in news stories but nothing was ever confirmed.

I loved everything about it except maybe the Blue Devil stuff.

I'm a huge fan of the comic book and DC Universe’s Swamp Thing creators Gary Dauberman and Mark Verheiden gave us a wonderfully dark and terrifying horror show, with amazing effects, an excellent reworking of the source material and a solid cast, so, of course, it got cancelled.

Really good adaption, def worth. A look.

The show was essentially cancelled before it even aired, they cut production from 13 eps to 10 (and rewrote the 10th to have a sort-of-ending). Cancellation was officially announced right after the first episode aired.

Reports are that the suits wanted the show to be a monster/crime-of-the-week show while everybody else wanted it to be a horror series with a story arc. So the suits took their money and went home.

Figures, I replied to someone else saying WB suits usually don't know what critics or audiences enjoy so I can't be too surprised they killed it so quickly. Not surprised, just disappointed.. now I know how my dad feels. 🙁

I really like it and it was supposed to be part of the big DC Universe, so it was created by Crisis on Infinite Earths on the CW. Unfortunately it never got the audience it needed to move forward because it was only on the DC Universe App. J.J. Abrams is apparently working on a new Swamp Thing series for HBO.

I haven't read anything about a future series but James Gunn has apparently confirmed a movie directed by James Mangold coming at some point.

I own this season on Blu-Ray. Big Swamp Thing fan. This was one of the losses when Zaslav took over. So disappointing as this show was incredible. They really nailed the atmosphere and feel.

The good parts are really good, but the human drama with side characters really drags it down for me.

I've heard good things, but then it was canceled abruptly, so I never felt like getting into it because of that. It was a really dumb reason, like the location had some perks of being cheaper to shoot there, like they want people to film there more, but some moron screwed up the paper work, so they didn't get the tax break, so the show gets canceled over it. I could be mistaken, but I think it was something along those lines, and being a WB production, it's very on brand.

From what I read it was budget cuts across the board, because it was the last show to premier on DC's streaming service which then got rolled into HBO Max. I'd also assume that in classic WB fashion they greenlit the show, then after 5 episodes of production someone said "nobody is gonna watch this!" because WB has never been too familiar with what critics and audiences will enjoy.

Edited

The tax credit theory was debunked because that's straight up not how those work.

If you enjoyed the show you need to read swamp thing by alan moore. Its easily my favourite piece of fiction regardless of medium.
