- MicheleZurich, Switzerland52 contributionsMust-do if in town!Very interesting. We went directly to the Old Scriptures and the model of Jerusalem and then headed to the Archeology section and the one of Jewish life. All the four were interesting and it took us 3h (altough we went pretty fast as the museum was closing). We would have liked to see more if time would have allowed. Nevertheless great experience. Highly recommend!Visited May 2023Traveled with friendsWritten May 26, 2023
- Li JDasmarinas City, Philippines72 contributionsWorth the visitThe highlight for me was seeing the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Aleppo Codex. The Bible's authenticity became more evident for me. The different galleries were also worth the visit as they showed Israel throughout the centuries till present day. The only drawback would be walking under the sun to get to the scale model of the city of David and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Bring a hat, light long sleeves shirt, or wear lots of sunscreen.Visited May 2023Traveled with familyWritten May 27, 2023
- AqusiteCalifornia1,579 contributionsAlong with Yad Vashem, one of the two greatest museums I have visited in the worldOne day is absolutely not enough for the incredible, huge, beautiful Israel Museum. In fact, I cannot wait to visit again. And normally, I don't "love" museums. But this was stunning. First of all, the location is nonpareil. Second of all, the grounds have grandeur. Third of all, I walked here from downtown Jerusalem, through Sacher and Rehovia Park, which took about an hour and was a beautiful walk, and when I arrived, I was hungry, so I went to the cafe first. It didn't have a huge selection but the feta-goat-cheese-beet tartine was actually one of the most delicious things I had eaten in all of Israel, and I steeled myself for more walking in this lovely cafe. Then I went to the Shrine of the Book. Honestly, that could have been a full three or four hour day. It was incredibly fascinating to learn about the Essenes and there was quite a lot tucked in underneath, including a film that I missed, sadly. Then onwards to the giant replica of Jerusalem, which was extraordinary in detail. I walked around part of a sculpture garden as well. And then I went to the archaeology section of the museum after that, and I was able to absorb like 20% of it at best, even though I am totally fascinated by ancient cultures of the Middle East (it's one of the things I am more interested in than almost anything). The explanations and displays were remarkable, and I spent perhaps three hours walking around. I tried to then go to the modern art section but at that point, I had been at the museum for upwards of six hours and was mentally faded. I saw some very interesting art for a few minutes, and then resolved to return but never did, which was a total mistake. There was also a great deal of art outside that I would have liked to see. Along with Yad Vashem, the Israel Museum is one of the two most extraordinary museums in the world that I have visited, exceeding the Louvre, the Metropolitan, and the National Gallery of Art in DC (other museums I hold in high regard, even if I had a very awful time at the Louvre). It's atmospheric and just so well curated. And I recommend walking there at least through Rehovia park and passing by the Monastery of the Cross because the contrast of the ancient, plus incredibly beautiful olive groves, and then the hilltop and views, it comes together to create a really extraordinary experience where the sum is more than its constituent parts.Visited June 2023Written July 1, 2023
- DavidthecoachDerby, United Kingdom57 contributionsA world class, carefully curated Museum.Unlike many museums that crowd their artefacts into the space, This Museum has the benefit of being recently built with ample space for visitors to appreciate the exhibits. The collection of course has some absolutely remarkable pieces. We visited with high expectations, and certain periods of history in mind but the way that the items we were looking for were displayed and the range of the displays left us in awe. If we had wanted to look at more periods of Israeli history than we were, a day would not have been enough. We ate lunch in the restaurant and enjoyed the light but well prepared lunch very much. No long wait in line, so we could get back to what we were there for after a short reflective break. All in all a very well curated Museum.Visited April 2023Written August 8, 2023
- revett2016Santa Rosa, California529 contributionsSprawling museumHad a wonderful guide in Ilana that gave a high level overview of the museum from a food perspective. The museum itself was not so wheelchair friendly, no automatic doors, small number of lifts or elevators and long distances between things. The museum itself was good with great collections. Including the dead sea scrolls and impressive impressionist collection. Overall a good way to spend time inside, away from the heat.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 1, 2023
- Jeffry bEssendon, Australia14,450 contributionsMuseum has many treasuresThe Israel Museum has many treasures, with modern art and architecture among them. The Museum opened in 1965, to house archaeological artifacts. The art from the late 19th century is stunning. One should not miss the Shrine of the Book, which houses the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Scrolls are the oldest surviving canonical scripts of the Jewish and Christian faiths. The Israel Museum has many artefacts collected from the Jewish life in the Diaspora.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 14, 2023

One of the most amazing museum with good written and good audio. Exhibitions are very organized and I highly recommend it!
However, the cafe staff are absolutely horrible the wanted to charge me 10 Nib (about $3!!!) for tiny bit of hot water in my OWN cup!! That’s just crazy! It’s really unacceptable and unheard of! And they are just too rude! Museum should change that!
Also I had to change my audio guide 3 times for it to work! These things really effect your overall experience.
Also echoing what other negative review mentioned, the museum and specially cafe staff were just a bit too aggressive and unfriendly.
The museum itself is amazing though and I hope the management provide more training for staff specially cafe staff! Hot Water is provided for free almost in all respected places all over the world!! That’s totally ridiculous to charge for this!

First, I’m a museum professional, a museum director so I have certain expectations on how guests are treated. I don’t allow museum staff to close even 1 minute early, closing time is the closing time and not before. Also, I tell them to never kick out guests who are in an exhibit at closing time. The guests are why museums exist. We arrived late with only about 45 minutes to view the exhibits. I really enjoyed the exhibits I was able to see, but 12 minutes before 5pm the guards kicked everyone out of the exhibits. That robbed me of a very valuable opportunity with already limited time. NEVER close exhibits early. That’s unacceptable in the museum profession

if you buy the ticket thru Trip Advisor it gets very confusing. When we got there nobody seemed to know anything. Finally after about 10 minutes and walking from here to there someone just let us in, Be sure you get your audiophones before you start the tour. Now, once you are inside, plan to come with time, there is lots to see and enjoy, it's quite a wonderful place. Glad we had the tickets since we did not have to wait, the problem was the logistics of where to meet.

This museum is amazing, and one of my favourite museums in the world! We spent 6 hours here and honestly could have spent longer. Each of the 3 main wings are exceptionally curated. For me, the Jewish Art and Life museum was an absolute standout, especially the reconstructed synagogues. I would recommend downloading the audio guide to your phone because if you're like me, you'll run the battery down on the museum's free audio guide before you've even finished one wing! Also, the coffee in the on-site cafe was very decent and a much-needed energy boost.

Some incredible artefacts, in a beautiful setting. Pity the Museum Curator wins over the Visitor Experience manager in this instance... Style over substance makes for a building that is extremely difficult to navigate your way around. We both got lost several times and this resulted in missing out on seeing some of the wonderful exhibits (we got beaten by closing time!).
Lovely friendly staff, and the restaurant food was very good.

At first it reminds you of a huge Hershey Kiss. Once inside, you are amazed from the design alone. The art work and sculptures are one of a kind- in many cases. Steeped in history, with beautiful music flowing, you can spend hours inside and also viewing the lovely grounds. A must tourist stop.

I visited the Israel Museum when I had some free time from my Birthright group (ages 27-32) in late December. I was there without 10 friends. The museum has an excellent sculpture garden (with outstanding views of Jerusalem) and wonderful galleries (broken up into art, archeology, and Jewish life). And then there's the Dead Sea Scrolls and the model of Old Jerusalem. Basically, this museum has 100+ things you shouldn't miss. It's huge. It's sprawling. Its collection is impressive. More than impressive, really. We were there about 4 hours, I think. And it wasn't nearly enough time. We grabbed a quick bite at the museum cafe so that we could stay as long as possible without getting hangry. We saw the Dead Sea Scroll room (don't miss this), a lot of the art collection, and a lot of the Jewish life collection. We didn't even make it into the archeology wing. It is an excellent museum, very worth your time.

If you intend to visit Qumram, be sure to visit this Jerusalem museum first since it provides critical context for what you will see next. There are lots of archeological displays and i was sure to read each and every one. Very well put together and fascinating history of the Essenes.
TIPS: Come early and plan the time you need to read all of the exhibits. Resist the temptation to race to the center of the museum like many people did.

this museum is a compilation of an art museum, a science museum, a museum of Israeli culture and Israeli history. The layout is rather confusing, and I had to consult my map several times. Make sure to visit the building containing the Dead Sea Scrolls - although all you see are facsimiles, not the scrolls themselves.

This museum is an excellent place to stop for your visit to Jerusalem. If you are studying Biblical history, it gives an excellent model of Jerusalem in the first century which will help you navigate the current Old City. Also, it is where the Dead Sea Scrolls are stored and preserved, along with many, many important artifacts found over the many years of archaeological findings. You may find replicas at the national parks and archaeological sites that are safely preserved in the museum. It is a well laid out museum, clean and modern, so it is pleasant for any visitor and you can see as much or as little as you like and still leave rich with information. I would encourage a stop here first to see the model before your journey so you can grasp things as you go.

Outside the Israel Museum there is this nog LOVE sign in Hebrew. Can somebody tell me whether the sign is freely accessible or do you need to go during opening hours of the museum? I'd like to take a photo of it during sunset.

There are special exhibitions and activity places designed for children. It changes from time to time, so you should look at the museum site for what is now available for children (of all ages).
