You will look in vain for Marty’s 1962 signature hit "Devil woman" (she appears nowhere near the core album ISLAND WOMAN), and you will search idly for the Marty Robbins Latin Album—which really should exist artistically but doesn't, quite. The devil woman's voodoo ghost haunts the Caribbean album, however, and as an appendix Bear Family have included the vestigial traces, six or so bonus tracks carefully sung in phonetic Spanish, that might have formed the nucleus of a fine Robbins Latin album: these latter are the real highlights here.
Robbins' two Hawaiian albums were deservedly big hits, and it was natural for him to make his Caribbean followup, evoking that devil woman, in the gloomy Nashville winter of 1963-64 with the customary lineup of producers Don Law and Frank Jones, Grady Martin on guitar, Bill Pursell on piano and the great brothers Glaser singing fraternal backup harmony. There's a lot of new Robbins material here, none of it particularly inspired, and the two standout tracks are outside the Caribbean: the sorrowful "Tahitian boy" and "Sweet bird of paradise." The album as a whole is no match for the consistently brilliant Hawaiiana Robbins recorded. Still, he took artistic risks no one else in Nashville, save Ray Price (also produced by Law and Jones), dared venture at the time.
Perhaps Latinate repertoire was just too risky. Johnny Rodriguez and Freddy Fender had yet to conquer Nashville with important bilingual hits, and Robbins dithered, temptingly, around the fringes of the lucrative Latin market. He'd composed and sung borderlands songs impressively since 1959, and in 1967 there was his terrifically piquant Tejano concept album TONIGHT CARMEN of all-original material, sung almost entirely in English. As a test run for new producer Bob Johnston (veteran of Bob Dylan sessions) he recorded "Yours" in English, marking the mainland segue in this collection, then followed up with a Spanish version plus five classic Latino standards beautifully (but not idiomatically) sung in Spanish in close harmony with little more than guitar backing. It's possible these are just rough demos, lacking the final overdub sweetening Nashville producers usually layer on. In any event, the songs sat in the can unreleased, finally surfacing on the 1973 compilation album BOUND FOR OLD MEXICO.
Purists might object to Robbins' casual mangling of a noble language, but he certainly gets the florid melodies passionately right (as he proved in his final bilingual hit "Return to me," in 1978). His island-voodoo originals are interesting novelties (and the early Glaser harmonies are superb), while Robbins’ much sparer Latino classics are the more important keepers here, sequels to the uniquely brilliant TONIGHT CARMEN project. Bear Family’s presentation is typically deluxe, with restored stereo sound, booklet discography and that dreamy original cover artwork from ISLAND WOMAN.

Marty Robbins incredible music is flawless, and shows how easily he could transcend genres. But I refrain from giving this CD re-issue five stars because the enclosed booklet is below Bear Family's usually high standards.
Most BF reissues have great booklets recounting the history of all the songs on the album, but this one lazily sings praises to Marty's talent and talks about the genre of Calypso music, but gives scant information on the tracks. There are several previously unreleased takes and tracks, but the booklet does not talk about them. There are three takes of "Girl From Spanish Town"----the one released back in the 60s that Marty's fans all know, and two strikingly different (including some different lyrics) unreleased takes, yet the booklet does not comment on how different they are or why Marty was apparently dissatisfied with the song enough to completely overhaul it.
Buy this for the great music, but don't expect Bear Family's usually top quality history to go with it. They dropped the ball on this one.

There are 25 songs on this cd, and only two written by Marty. He wrote "Girl From Spanish
Town", and it is on this cd three times !!! He actually recorded it three different times
in three different ways!! I like comparing the three. Marty was very good at singing
Calypso music. There are two songs where he puts on an accent while he sings! You can't
even tell that it is him, until he hits those high long notes, then you say, oh yeah, it is
Marty. haha. I wouldn't call this collection "hard core" calypso, it is just nice gentle
calypso, sorta like "devil woman". It is just so enjoyable. I love to let it play over
and over. When you get to the Mexican part (9 songs) there are a few sung in Spanish. They are really done lovely, but i prefer the 16 calypso ones. Marty was such a wonderful
eclectic singer, and this album surely proves it !!!! Enjoy !!

I grew up with "Island Woman." Loved it and some of his other records, as did my family! This recording has three different year recordings of "Girl from Spanish Town" and two of "Kingston Girl," which, for the purposes of this album, fits, One just has to be mindful of that when hearing the same song, possibly with slight variations, a few times while playing the CD. ---It's the "musical journey" of his Caribbean/Mexican-themed songs and when he recorded them. And, while Spanish is obviously not a language Mr. Robbins grew up speaking, his beautiful voice, in my opinion, can do no wrong! I was SOOO happy to find "Island Woman," in any format, again. Thank you!!!

His love of hawaiian music is heard with all the ballads in this album. It is very relaxing to listen to and transforms his listeners to a warm beach with cool breezes and warm water. I love this album!

One of Marty Robbins best albums! The songs and Martys incredible voice are here in one great album! One cut from the album "Calypso Girl" ranks right up there with "El Paso"

I was surprised there are many songs on this CD. Marty does a fine job with the Island Songs and the Spanish songs.
Good listening to his easy way of singing, A good purchase for me and play it often.

This album is truly amazing. It gets better and better the more you listen to it.
It's almost as if Marty was born To sing In this wonderful style of calypso/Tex/Mex. The Spanish language ones are just superb especially La Paloma. There are several versions of some of the songs but they are different attempts at the same song at different recording sessions. All of the songs on this extended cd are great my own favourites being Calypso girl and the wonderful La Paloma. This Is one of the best CDs In my collection and I will always treasure
It. My girlfriend absolutely adores the music of Marty Robbins and Is of the opinion that he Is quite possibly one of the best singers of all time and of any music genre and I think she has a point. Please buy without delay. Bear Family Is King.

Marty Robbins at his best

So glad I bought this CD - it is definitely one of my favourite Marty Robbins CDs. There are several tracks on here that I have never heard before. Some of the tracks are sung in Spanish and are just beautiful - can't believe I've never found this gem before. If I were to make one criticism it would be that some tracks are repeated on the CD - don't really understand why, but still great all the same. Recommended if you are a Marty Robbins fan.
