Over 27 years after “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” hit theaters, a new installment in the “Ace Ventura” franchise is finally in the works.

Collider reports that Morgan Creek, the production company for the first two movies, revealed it is developing a new sequel in collaboration with Amazon Studios.

“It’s noticeable from the 3 million fans chatting on the official Facebook page for Ace Ventura that audiences are clamoring for a third installment,” a Morgan Creek team member said in an interview (via IGN). “During COVID-19, audiences have been in love and are thrilled to have beloved characters brought back with new stories. ‘Ace Ventura’ will see a new day at Amazon as a major motion-picture/theatrical with the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ writers.”

‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective’ originally debuted in 1994, IGN reports, and the film helped secure Jim Carrey’s place as a Hollywood A-lister. The movie’s commercial success led to a followup film, “Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls,” that was released a year later.

According to ScreenRant, a third ‘Ace Ventura’ movie wasn’t made earlier because Jim Carrey had no interest in reprising his role as the animal detective until recently.

Collider reports that “Ace Ventura 3” will be Carrey’s third collaboration with writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller. The trio previously worked together on 2020’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” and are currently filming its sequel, which is expected to release in 2022. It’s possible that “Ace Ventura 3” could be Carrey’s immediate project after filming for “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” wraps up.

The project is still in early development stages, and details regarding its cast and production timeline are still being sorted out. For that reason, ScreenRant predicts it’s unlikely “Ace Ventura 3” will hit theaters before 2023.
