We drove though the Califoria delta area on our way from the Bay area to Sacramento. We did a picnic. There are various small towns to explore We have also rented boats and gone boating on the delta area.

Locke, CA is an historic town, built originally around 1915 by Chinese agricultural workers, passing through a phase of gambling and prostitution during Prohibition, and now a nascent art colony and historic site being preserved by a valiant band of local residents. This is authentic history of the American west and deserves to be widely visited.

Locals and tourists you must drive to the California Delta. From any direction head for Rio Vista (a good starting point). Take the Real McCoy II ferry across from Rio Vista to Ryer Island, drive the levees, circle the island, then take the J-Mack cable-ferry across Steamboat Slough to Grant Island. From there aim for Isleton. There's still bit more levee, then you enter awesome little Isleton.

Have a full tank of gas, but don't worry about paying for the ferries. They're free!

As you drive down the levees look to the left and right. Notice that the water to one side is higher than the land on the other. Those amazing waterways empty to the Pacific Ocean. Those levees are all the keep the Pacific Ocean out of the islands.

We took a great boat trip from Stockton, up the San Joaquin River to Rio Vista, round trip. We were on a pontoon boat and experienced beautiful scenery and lots of interesting beaches and restaurants to visit along the way. Would recommend to anyone looking for fun and adventure!

While in the Delta recently I visited a little town called Locke. There is a bar/restaurant there called AL THE WOPS. A total "joint" with dollar bills on the ceiling, the best cheeseburger I've ever had, steak sandwiches served with peanut butter and grilled bread and a great helping of history to go with it all. Definitely a place to visit!!!!

We would of been lost if it wasn't California Delta Maps
There are 1,000 miles of waterways. These maps have locations of Campgrounds, Marinas, Restaurants and much more. A must for Boaters, Campers and Fishermen.

Rent some jet skis, a little boat or a house boat, tool around, visit Lost Isle and pet a pig, meet people on other water crafts, enjoy the water, the many inlets and islands.. Always nice.

You can get to the Bay Area by driving through part of the Delta. Takes a little longer, but worth it. Stop in Locke, the old Chinese town, and have lunch at Al's Place (aka Al the Wop's). Famous for their steak sandwiches at lunch served with peanut butter and jelly for your bread. Try to put a dollar on the ceiling. Ask the bartender!

Not only do I go there ... I LIVE there. Best location to get away without a long trip. Friendly people and beautiful scenery. Can't beat it. Just ask the locals where to go when you stop at the fantastic wineries in Clarksburg. Miners Leap / The Old Sugar Mill / Bogle ( all within a couple of miles from the Freeport Bridge )

Check out the Delta Chamber of Commerce's web page and take the Delta loop by car. Many good restaurants in Ryde, Locke, Rio Vista, etc. If you have good boating skills, rent a skiff for the day or houseboat for the weekend, and get out on the water. Alternativley book a trip with one of the local '6-pack' charter fishing guides for Largemouth or Striped Bass much of the year, and sturgeon in the winter. Before Memorial or after Labor Day are best for mild weather, less bugs, less crowds, and houseboat rates usually better than anywhere else in California.
