Never judge a book by its cover, so they say — and by that logic, you should never judge a Netflix Original by its title either. Squid Game wasn’t really about squids playing games, after all. That may also go for Kevin Hart‘s new drama series, True Story, which could or could not be based on an actual true story. The thriller series certainly leads viewers to believe it actually happened, thanks to its title, but is that the case? Let’s dive into the true story behind True Story, if it exists.

The ever-comedic Hart’s foray into drama is grabbing plenty of new viewers on Netflix. Apart from being a twist in and of itself, the series is full of twists and turns as a famous comic deals with his brother threatening his entire career. The matter becomes life or death while Kid (Hart) makes a fateful stop in his hometown, encountering his dangerous big bro Carlton (Wesley Snipes).

Here’s everything you need to know about whether or not True Story is based on a true story.

Is Kevin Hart’s True Story actually based on a true story?

Sadly, True Story doesn’t live up to its name. Hart’s new show is fictionalized, written by creator Eric Newman.

What is True Story based on?

Again, the script is penned by Newman — it’s not based on a book, real life, or anything, really. But in an interview with the New York Times, Hart discussed some of the truth in the comedy.

True Story is largely fictionalized, but Hart’s real life has not lacked for drama,” reads Hart’s profile. “He is only two years removed from a car accident in which he sustained major back injuries, requiring surgery and rehabilitation, and which he has said left him a changed man. And it has been almost three years since he stepped down as host of the Academy Awards after some of his past jokes and comments were criticized as homophobic.”
