New Philadelphia woman scammed by man claiming to be soldier

Times-Reporter

NEW PHILADELPHIA A New Philadelphia resident reported Tuesday that she was scammed by a man who claimed to be with the U.S. Army in Germany.

The woman told police that she met the man on the Plenty of Fish online dating service. The man told her he wanted to have the Army send to her his on leave pay in the amount of $649. She then gave the man her account information.

She later noticed the money was in her account, but the description of the transfer was strange and did not seem to be from the Army.

She told police she learned that the money was from an unemployment scam in Colorado.

The woman has contacted her bank, and the fraud department is handling the matter.
