Product Description

Cat People, The/Curse of the Cat People (DVD) (Multi-Title)

The studio gave Val Lewton small budgets and lurid pre-tested film titles. Lewton, working with rising filmmakers and emphasizing fear of the unseen, turned meager resources into momentous works of psychological terror. Directed by Jacques Tourneur, Cat People is the trailblazing first of Lewton's nine horror classics. Simone Simon portrays a bride who fears an ancient hex will turn her into a deadly panther when she's in passion's grip. Simon returns in The Curse of the Cat People, a sequel in title and a landmark study of a troubled child in fact. Robert Wise makes his directing debut, co-helming a gothic-laced mix of fantasy and fright so astute it was used in college psychology classes.

These films are both classic in different ways
The first Cat People is a 100 % classic that takes risks while the second does have great moments it's overall purpose is forced on the audience making it too commercial in the end.I am not saying The Curse of the Cat People is bad-- it is just not as good as the original and not even a horror movie. The original has great cinematography with great use of light/shadows in the classic noir style. The subject matter is dark and there are darkly comedic moments usually involving classic dialogue. I have no problem with the first film and will not go into detail about it -- it is great in every way.Back to Curse-- I agree with many of the things that have been said about the psychological aspect of the young girl. The young actor that plays the lead does a great job. You can tell the photography was labored over in this one as well. There are some great scenes like when the old lady in the creepy cat house tells the little girl the story of sleepy hollow. Another standout is the almost art film esque scenes where the little girl is being ignored by the local kids. The best thing about Curse is how totally bizarre and incoherent the script is.It is laughable in a stoner way that the girl talks to the dead cat woman from the first film but in a sort of after school special Christmas drama--yes i said Christmas-- 3/4 of the way into the film it turns into a commercial Christmas movie with extended scenes of Christmas carolers etc. I am not complaining here-- i love absurd things-- this film gets 4 stars just based on how absurd it is.The original Cat People is a horror flick that actually gets scary during the brilliant scene where the lady is stalked in the pool room and you, in Hitchcock tradition, only hear the growl bouncing off of the acoustics to make a genuinely creepy moment or 2. That scene is redone almost to the t in the 1983 version(but a bloody rated r rendering) which i actually like as well.I recommend both of these films. I purchased the double feature dvd with Amazon and am happy with this purchase.
